Need Help 2009 CalVin Windshield
« on: November 29, 2018, 07:03:47 PM »
2009 California Vintage.  This bike has spacers in the windshield mounts that do not show up in the parts fiche.

I was able to contact the original owner of this bike and he says that these windshield spacers were on the bike when purchased, brand new.

The issue is that I have ordered a new windshield from Rifle Fairings, and am wondering if there is a difference in this windshield and any of the other years

SO, I tried reversing the mounts every which way, and they really only fit one way.
Went out to Harpers and looked at the parts fiche, but it only goes to 2008.

Of course, I replaced the old steel, painted spacers with pretty aluminum ones - and SS hardware.

Anyone ?

The AF1Racing microfiche is listed for '06 through '11 and is the same image shown on the Harpers fiche...

These spacers are not original.... this is strange.
New windshields have those rubber washers also for the outer screws, like yours.

Maybe the large stainless steels holders which are mounted to the forks are not mounted correctly (interchanged).

These photos show a pre series Vintage. The holders for the aux lamps were changed later, but you can see how the shield is mounted.
Or look here:

This is the windshield and you can also see these holders (image 2+3):

Certainly, there's something fishy going on here.
The strange thing is that the original owner says that he bought it that way, brand new.

Many thanks to sheepdog for measuring his windshield - and confirming the hole spacing is the same as mine.

It's a mystery, to be sure.

My friend (and silent forum member) bought a Vintage identical to mine, save one detail: it had a different fuel injection CPU (15M vs 15RC). The original owner mentioned nothing about an exchange, yet there it was. The confusing part of your story is the rusty spacers...all the original hardware of the Vintage windshield mounts are either stainless or aluminum. I guess enough time has passed that these bikes are likely to have all manner of modifications...som e may have even occurred during the initial dealer setup.

Yep.  The good news is that I haven't found any other oddities (yet)

I had an 07 CalVin and mine had no such set up as that. I have a hard time with the factory setting up the shield like that. It is that mounting system is no where as security as the two mounts behind bolted together without the long bolts and spacers.

Maybe the bikes were shipped w/o shild and some dealers did not mount them correctly....?

I have just re-remounted a new original windshield (with better screws, washers and self-locking nuts).
That´s how it should look (those spacers are not "normal"):

Thanks everyone for the pictures.

My side plates look exactly like everyone's pictures and are mounted in the same manner.
The windshield brackets look the same, and the long portion of the bracket is pointing down.  There are a couple of compound angles involved on the tabs that mount to the windshield bolts.  It really only lays "right", in a certain manner - and that is as depicted in everyone's pics (thanks again)

At this point, I'll wait for that replacement windshield plastic to arrive from Rifle Fairings.......

In my mind, there are a couple of possibilities -
1.  The windshield is actually for a different bike and they adapted it to fit (wrong curvature, maybe)
2.  The windshield brackets are wrong, and the dealer adapted it to fit.
3.  Gremlins

hahahaha - if it was warm weather, then I could just ride to the nearest rally and hopefully do a direct comparison on any CalVins that showed up.

Your windshield has a particular Moto Guzzi sticker on it. That was a feature on the stock shields. I'm starting to think that this was an assembly error from the original dealer...

I am with you on that thought........  Wondering if they bent the tabs.....

If everthing is installed correctly you can smoothly change the position/angle of the windshield:

Your holders are inward-looking:

This is not correct.
Do your holders have these bends?:

Left and right holders are different.
As I wrote before, maybe holders are interchanged.

I have already mounted my windshild, so it was not so easy to measure.

Where you measure
10 inch (254 mm)
I measure approx
10.6 inch (270 mm)

First of all - THANK YOU to all that took their time to help me with this.

The new windscreen arrived from "Rifle Fairings" today.  It's +1" on the width and +3" on the height.  Light tint.
The the fitment was the same as before, with an 3/4" gap on each side.  I never like to bend something to "fit" but at this point, I figured what the heck...... so I decided to reshape the windshield mounting brackets by bending the tabs on the brackets that mount to the windshield (they had an odd angle) and also slightly bend the brackets that mount to the front forks.

It now fits all proper.
