UFI oil-filter paint cracked
« on: November 30, 2018, 08:19:09 AM »

The paint on the top of the filter has cracked. Never seen this before. Could it mean that the piston rod bearings are damaged - leading to higher temperature radiation to the filter top?

I will check the bearings anyway - but interested to know what you guys have seen over the years.

It is a Quota 1100 from 1999.

Add poor paint prep to UFI's woes of bad gaskets. I've seen pictures of paint flaking off of UIs. I quit using them in 07.

I have seen cracked paint on one of their filters but didn't seem like it was peeling or loose. I don't think it's your engine at all.

How come I can't see the enlarged image when I click on the thumbnail?  IMGBB wants me to create an account and log in.

Is this just an off-site hairball?  Or is IMGBB getting mucked up like photobucket did?

If it is the former, can someone fix the coding?

I'm also getting bopped with a login page.  Perhaps the OP needs to re-upload the pic.  That should make a new link, with luck, to the image and not the login screen.

Is the can dented, or is it just paint missing?  Is it near a seam?  I've had ufi's break their crimp.  The early warning was broken paint.

Is it a tall can in a short sump?  I've never done that combination, but it could have a clearance problem.  If a rod did hit it you'd see a gouge and dent where it made contact.  I doubt it would hurt the rod.

Without a pic that's all I've got.

Here is a picture of a UFI filter I replaced years ago.
The paint was blistered.

We use the HiFlo motorcycle-specific filters.  They've been around Since 1963 and a lot of their filters are also supplied to original equipment manufacturers as well as private label brands.

They carry pretty much all of the Moto-Guzzi fit filters

http://www.hiflofiltro.com/why-hiflo

(Guzzi Content)  They're about $8.  Less, if you buy in bulk and share with your friends.

Thank you for all reply. In the Quota (own by a friend) the filter is inside - that is why I was a little afraid of the extra heat from the crank with extra tight bearings.

Now I will tell my friend to continue the assembly of the new filter and forget about any worries.

Thanks

Rolf
