Now, for something different (NGC)
« on: January 01, 2019, 05:32:52 PM »
DIL Winnie's Chinese mom wanted to look for sea urchins. "About this big, covered with spines. Eat them raw, delicious. "
I've had Chinese food  but went anyway.

They will be in tidal pools, so we went at low tide. Santa Monica mountains in the background.

Lots of walking and looking, but a distinct lack of sea urchins ensued. .

I'd consider a day where you had a nice walk, didn't get finned by any sea creatures, and didn't have to eat raw sea urchin when you got home a VERY successful one!

Chuck,
in my painful experience  those urchins sit at a few feet's depth, say 4-5 ft and deeper.
As for the eating, I haven't tried….. (I too would settle for the hike    )

Don't get your Irish up, it's just an old joke ....

The guy's just going fishing.   Eating a live fish would be a strange and hasty meal, so he'll probably kill it and eat it first ....

When it comes to posts regarding animals in any way shape or form, that might be an EXCELLENT idea; it's hard to tell sometimes .....  :embarrassed:

Jacques Cousteau once said that the urchin is the most deadly of all sea creatures.  I have some friends that dive for them commercially and they have been for surgery repeatedly to try and remove remnants of spines in the hands.  One is on low dose antibiotics to keep his body from reacting to a constant low grade infection they have caused. His hands look like a lumpy toad, poor bastard. If those little buggers don't kill him the nitrogen narcoses probably will eventually.  Handle with extreme care. The divers wear special gloves and still get poked right through them. Most use little rakes and rake them into dive bags. They can make good $ when they get into them but the end price doesn't look worth it to me.  The row tastes basically like mushy sea water if you like that sort of thing.

Pacific oysters are briny and good.

Especially good in shooters with vodka and bloody mary mix.    :boozing:

I lived in the Caribbean when I was a kid. All I had to do to find Sea Apples was walk in the water barefoot. Actually there are several varieties. Black Sea Urchins are the ones with the most painful spines. The White Sea Urchins have short spines with blunt ends. I got nailed by a Black Sea Apple in the front of my foot once. The pain was intense and the recovery took a while, but I didn't have to go to the doctor.

Oh, and here in the Delta we've got pretty good oysters, too:

The sea urchins are okay for me.  Not my favorite.  They are eaten all over the world.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

oh I love gulf oysters.  I usually have them at happy hour 2 or 3  times a month.   Local joint has them for $12 a dozen.
