Went to an 'open' day at Santa Pod a couple of years back, there was a 'Rat-Bike' group there with a dozen or so Bikes on display.
I'd never had a good close look at one before, and had always dismissed them as a bit of a mess.

When you get a close look at a 'good' one though, the level of thought and work that goes into them is quite impressive.
Must be fun to build something where you're free from the normal cosmetic restraints.

It always seems to be French guys who are doing the wild stuff, like flying backpack jetwing rigs over the Alps, or rocket bicycles, or crossing Africa in full leathers on a track bike.

Must be something in the wine.

He's Swiss, but yeah, the French do seem to have more than their fair share of 'quirky' guys when it comes to wacky transport.

Yeah, those guys! Seems to be a lot of them.

I never have been able to find the documentation on the French guy who crossed almost roadless Africa on a full sport bike in full leather gear. The pictures of him in his gear pushing his bike through 2 foot deep mud with road tires gave me heatstroke just looking at them ....

Not sure about a Frenchman doing that (but i don't doubt it), but Nick Sanders is probably the most famous (infamous?) Globe-Trekker on Bikes.

He's been round the World several times, on various Bikes.
