HP difference between round head 850 vs 1000
« on: March 01, 2019, 12:28:27 PM »
I’m comparing the standard 850 T/T3 motor to the 1000 SP/G5. I know there is only 100cc difference but would like to hear real world comparison. The numbers are pretty close from what I’ve read. Many here have had both.

Going by numbers posted on the internet the 850T (844cc) produces about 55hp. The SP1000 (948cc) produces about 61hp in stock trim. I think they mean Clydesdale verses Quarter Horse Horse power  when referencing Guzzi.

What kind of differences? Dimensional? Horsepower? Torque? The heads are the same AFAIK. The holes in the block for the cylinders are about .020" bigger on a 950 motor.

I understand it's a bigger bore, but didn't know the heads were the same.  6 HP might  make a small difference.  Both are good motors.

83 vs. 88 mm bore. The 950 makes a little more torque and vibrates slightly more. If you really wring them out the 950 may make a tiny bit more power but the real limiting factor is the port size and carburettor choke size.

I have always felt ,in my limited experience, two of each, that the 850 was smoother. Maybe a bit less bottom end, but I have always likes the 850s.
