I had to measure a strip of metal. Reached for the ruler and automatically laid down the Metric side.
My G-d I realized, when did Metric become my default system?
What has happened? My unconscious switch must have been only in the last couple of years. Sad.
As for my kids, I've given up. For all I know they may not even have English unit rulers in school. Hell, I know they're not teaching cursive.

I like the metric system for weighting spices and cures when curing meats. Much easier to accurately weight out in grams than it is to weight out fractions of ounces.
The metric system is a way more rational system based on 10's verses English systems that are based on 3's, 12's, 16's and so on.

I used to working in shipping, loading boxes and trucks, and the English system is actually better for that. Things are shipped in cubic cardboard containers, and multiples of 4 fit those containers best. A cube can fit 4, 8, or 12 easily. 5 and multiples of 5, not so much. Lots of dead space.
The advantages of English units may end there, but I'd like to hear more.

In the loyal colonies, of course, they are known as Imperial units. An anathema in a republic? It seems to me that the language itself is poorer without these historical units in common usage. Rods, perches, tuns, and so on. (The mathematics with these is somewhat painful. It doesn't help that in different juristictions (states, in a federation) the measures for beer, for example, pints, schooners, middies, pots & ponies have different millilitres in them, but a litre of beer is too much - it's gone warm before you're halfway through. Then there's ounces - I used to buy tobacco by the ounce - there's 100 grams in a tobacco ounce. There's not 100 grams in most other ounces, and there likely other other stuff that's weighed differently. Metric may be easier to work with, but the richness of the barstard language that is English suffers somewhat.

Sometimes uniformity/conformity is not the best path.
I have a piece of made in the USA machinery at work it has a John Deere motor Denison Hyd Pumps and motors and NAS axels. The hyd fittings at all dash sized fittings which means preciesly zero to anyone outside the USA the motor is made in Mexico so its all metric and the axels and made in Germany. Why having to carry two tool sets around for the same bit of gear is nesscary is beyond me.

As a Canuck I was raised with metric, having 'converted' in the 70's and being an Architectural Technologist, fancy name for draftsman, I have been thinking and inputting metric for decades... but.. I still convert mentally to feet and inches, square and cubic feet since I started in my chosen industry 40 years ago.
Can't explain it but I can only acknowledge speed, volume and area in feet and inches.

I was an apprentice fitter / machinist when we went metric in Oz so I was more or less forced to embrace it. After all these years I still use a mix of metric and imperial in my daily life.
At least a litre is a litre wherever you are, not so much with a gallon. Funny thing that tyre sizes are also a combination of inches for diameter and mm for width - also I will measure tyre pressure in psi until my dying day.
If I could only ever have one system it'd be metric.

I hear you. I got a vernier caliper (another lost art) from China. The metric side was okay, but the inch side was inaccurate and unusable.

My carbs were acting up a while back (turns out one of the vents was plugged). Brought a carb to the local hardware store and told the guy helping me that I needed some hose @ 2-3 millimeters inner diameter. I think he said - "looks like a 16th of an inch to me. Hardly ever touch my standard tools any more.

You’re arguably confusing decimal and metric. Most engineering outside of the construction industry is done in decimal units (for example thousandths on an inch) regardless of the unit of measure. This solves 99% of the issues associated with any units.
That said, fractions enhance communication in conversation relative to decimal measurement. If you say your fuel tank is half full, versus 50% full, you do it for a reason.
The advantage we have in the US is that we use all systems of measurement depending on what is best for the circumstances, we are not forced to use anything. That flexibility makes money. For example, competing in the certified aircraft business is very difficult if you want to use metric materials and equipment - all the certified off the shelf aircraft stuff is made in inch-based standards that will probably never be revisited. Using certified off the shelf hardware is a huge advantage in both low cost initial manufacture and (even more so) in long term field supportability. On the hand, I’d bet the large numbers of GM cars sold in China don’t have any SAE fasteners that a local mechanic would need to access... in spite of having inch sized wheels!

Years ago, when the USA was going to be made to go metric whether anyone liked it or not, the various state DOTs began installing highway signs in metric units, with the imperial units in little parentheses below.
The message was clearly "We'll give the curmudgeons a bit of time to get used to it by leaving the miles in little numbers, but kilometers are here to stay, get used to it, be there or be square!"
Forty years on, all the signs I ever see are in miles again, without a bit of kilometer on it. All the meat in the grocery store, all the cereal packages, everything except weird imported stuff, is all in pounds and ounces.
It may happen someday, but it's probably not going to be forced on anyone ....

I've got all three and I use them about equally. My old Brit bikes aren't going anywhere, so I can't see getting rid of the Whitworth. About half the equipment I buy is SAE and half is metric, so I use them both, and don't see that changing at all.
Doesn't make any difference to me. Who cares if a bolt head takes an 11/16" or a 17 mm? I just use what fits. My metric sockets take up one drawer in the tool box, metric open and box wrenches in another. Same for SAE. And the ratchet and breaker-bar handles are all SAE (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", etc.) Those will never go metric, I'll bet. Nor will 5/8" or 13/16" spark plugs. Nor will ... well, you get the idea.
Just not a very big issue.

Which leads us to the very common 3/4 inch auto lug nut hex solution... or alternately use a tool measuring 0.748 inches (19 mm).

We generally weigh ourselves in Stones, drink pints but measure temperature in centigrade and buy petrol in litres
Nothing like keeping other countries guessing as to where we stand.........which seems to be continuing right now.

Lannis, the speedo on the Breva is in both, but although we are in kms in NZ, sadly it is the MPH that is large. the KPH is so small that it could be 10kmh either side and I couldn't pick it. The speedo is so busy that I actually use the rev counter, 4000rpm = 100kph which is our speed limit. At night the speedo is illegible.

I think you will find dash system is used world wide, standard for hydraulics is still imperial, and truck air lines is still widely imperial.

I sholdn't worry about it. The UK has been trying to get rid of imperial units for decades and we are still using them despite the best efforts of the EU.
I am 6'2" tall, weigh 13 stone, use mpg for the bike but always measure in metric, no problem.

For feeler gauge stuff I just remember 4 thou is a tenth of a millimeter and that gets me back and forth OK.

I cleaned the chain on one of my bikes, the books sez the slack should be 35-37mm. I cleaned it and felt for the tight spot, got my tape measure out, it read 1 3/8.

I grew up with both.
My conclusion is that we should genetically grow an extra finger on each hand, and then use this as the basis of our new counting system ........ 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,x,y,10. Twelve is divisible by 2,3,4, & 6; 10 is divisible only by 2 & 5, a distinct disadvantage.

My thought was entirely different. I figure we need to start an international program to confront the solar system error that has resulted in 365 days in a year instead of 100. After that we go after 24 hours in a day. It’s for the children.

The inches side of the rule didn't have fractions of an inch like 1/4, 1/2, ect. Instead the inches were graduated in tenths, like the metric side. Weird.
I'm okay w tenths on the metric side, but I like inches in regular fractions.

I used to take a night course at a tech college machine shop. After you made a few things they would let you loose to use all the very nice machines to make whatever you wanted. One of the things I made was a set of V blocks, heat treated and ground to precision . I made them to metric dimensions and the instructor hated that because he was not familiar with metric measurement. I explained how it was so much easier than inch dimensions but he was still confused so I converted it all out for him and of course it came out to be oddball inch sizes but he still preferred I made stuff to inch sizes . And he was about ten years younger than I

A decimal marked rule is standard practice for technical work anywhere, regardless of units. Both types are widely available.

The units make no difference to the ease of running a machine tool. Obviously any machine tool is run in the decimal system, whether inches or millimeters.
Anything measured accurately in any units is an oddball dimension unless it is (per your example) ground to within a few ten thousands of an inch and you are measuring with a pair of calipers accurate to only one thousandth. Since most things are not ground, almost everything has a an oddball finished dimension made within an oddball tolerance range, regardless of units.

What I am saying is I am the opposite of you that I got so used to imperial, I sometimes look at people funny mentioning metric system beside the temperature and speed. :shocked:

I have a very good friend who was a surveyor for a number of years and always thougt it was funny to carry around his 12' engineers tape measure, and when somebody asked to measure something He'd toss them his tape and watch in amazement people trying to figure it out without trying to be seen as ignorant.

The real irony is that the USA left the UK long before Canada, and yet we adhere to the Imperial (English) longer than anyone else.
They have value in woodworking, and shipping, not so much in the tech fields.

Prefer metric in everything except distance. Prefer miles to KMs', at least in the states.

Politics! The inch, foot, yard, etc, were based on a human measurement. Width of a finger, length of a foot, length of a stride. Who cared if you bought a little more or less rope or grain. In those days, people were not that interested in precision and money didn't mean much anyway...most things were bartered and negotiated.
If you liked that particular guy... (or if he conquered your country), fine! If not, use Metrics. They are based on the planet...circumfere nce, etc. The US and Rhodesia are the only countries that still formally recognize the SAE (Society of American Engineers), system. However, elements of the SAE system are still found in the UK and elsewhere...road signs and so on.
Nowadays, politics are different. We use standard monetary systems and we demand what we pay for. Just last month the System International (SI) universalized the standard for the kilogram. It is no longer compared to a platinum-iridium sample in France. It is now based on the wavelength of a defined color laser. Everyone owns it now.
I don't know the answer, I just remember when we crashed a probe into the planet Mars because somebody did not realize the computer programs were set up for metrics and the instruments on the probe were set up for SAE. What a world!
All I know is that I still enjoy a pint of Guiness...or 473.176473 ml, to be precise.

Well, the meter is defined on the basis of the wavelength of a particular color of light, which is duplicable in any physics lab. It used to be defined as the distance between two marks on a platinum-iridium bar in France, which was based on one ten-millionth of the distance between the equator and North Pole of the earth, but that changed in 1960 or so.
The kilogram was based on the mass of a weight also held in France which represented the exact weight of a liter of water, but the platinum-iridium mass was found to have changed a measurable bit over the years. Now the kilogram is based on the value of Planck's constant, in terms of the definition of the "second" and the "meter", so it can't really change.
But since the meter is defined via a light wavelength, and the kilogram definition contains the meter as part of its specification, then the kilogram definition is (as you say) derived from the light wavelength, at one level of indirection ...

Retired scientist here; even though I grew up in and still live in the USA, I think in metric. Has worked out fine over the years with my motorcycles, the vast majority of which have been German, Italian, or Japanese.

Hi all,
Not to put too fine a point on it, but...
Planck’s Constant, (h) is defined in terms of Kg mxm/s. Both m and s are measured by the wavelength of a defined radiation (light). Atomic clocks use Cesium lasers, the meter is defined in terms of the light of a Krypton laser, and so on.
Just to be clear, the “one level of indirection” as previously mentioned, is the only measurable quantity needed to define the Kg. Planck’s constant cannot be directly measured by any known means. It is actually the result of several other measurable relationships. Even the Kibble Balance (thanks to our UK brothers and sisters), “measures” mass by equating mechanical forces and electrical forces…Joules, Watts, etc., once again, directly dependent upon the measurable wavelength of a specific laser.
As far as Guinness is concerned, and me living in the good ‘ol US of A, when I order a ‘pint’ it is just 16 oz., not 20. I’m so jealous of you folks in the UK…you get 25% more beer in your glass!

Aside from the fuel miscalculations, I can't believe that the Canadians allowed a passenger jet to take off w malfunctioning instruments, that the plane's systems didn't have a backup for electrical and hydraulic systems on "engines out," and that landing on "engines out" wasn't a part of pilot training.
Glad the crew saved everyone.

Aside from the fuel miscalculations, I can't believe that the Canadians allowed a passenger jet to take off w malfunctioning instruments, that the plane's systems didn't have a backup for electrical and hydraulic systems on "engines out," and that landing on "engines out" wasn't a part of pilot training.

A good friend of mine is a Southwest Airlines pilot, and he and I spend some time talking about the results of these incidents as they occur.
For example, the Air France 447 flight where an instrument malfunctioned, and although the pilots had enough information to figure out what was going on, a junior pilot (while the captain was in the loo), just held the stick back in his lap (so to speak, it was actually at his side) while the plane mushed along and fell from 35,000 feet into the ocean. I'll ask "What have the airlines done to assure that guys actually understand that they are aviators flying an airliner, and not just playing a simulator video game with joysticks?" and he always has a very good answer for me, directly applicable to the errors committed.
The flyers here can tell us better, but just like English is the agreed-upon language of airlines and air traffic control, it seems that miles and feet (flight levels) are the international units of the air, and not meters and kilometers. What units they use to fill fuel tanks up, though, to prevent someone thinking they've put 10,000 kilograms of fuel in the tank when they actually put 10,000 pounds in the tank, I don't know. I sure hope there are checks and balances these days!

I won't get into it too deep but..
Back in the 50' all the aviation (commercial) had a convention to decide what language to use for flying aircraft internationally. English won by a couple of votes over..gulp French.
Most English speaking countries fuel in pounds, it sort of depends on how your fuel gage is calibrated. They are not changeable by the pilot or maintence people for obvious reasons.
All aircraft have an official MEL (minimum equipment list), meaning aircraft cannot dispatch without any piece of equipment required for flight. The failed, missing? equipment must be deferred in the maintence log by a quite formal procedure and any limitations must be followed.
Flight levels are in feet in most cases but in China for example they are in meters and you have to set your altimeter for the difference, and surface winds are in meters per second.
In China your captain might only have 1000 hours of flight time!!! and controllers in many areas of asia only understand 200 to 300 words in English so the colloquial slang won't work so pretty good.
Most commercial operators have a training program designed in-house that is supposed to comply with the aircraft manuals and the local aviation authority.
There is much more but I doubt that is of much interest here.
If you fly on a foreign carrier other than western countries like the USA and UK, Fr Gr, It, Oz, NZ...etc....

Following on in the aviation theme, here is a recent video that shows the trials and tribulations involved with maintaining an aircraft manufactured with metric non-standard parts. This would be the same anywhere in the world - the factories that did or still do it (typically in certain eras of Russian, Chinese, Czech, Italian, German, Spanish or French production) use custom made everything, including nuts and bolts, and even if the company is still in existence, e.g. Socata in France or Airbus Helicopters, and anything you need is supplied to order and very expensive. If the manufacturer instead uses commercial metric hardware, they have to self certify it meaning that you still have to buy it from them, by their part number, to avoid breaking the law. If the manufacturer is no longer in existence, the aircraft typically goes into Experimental airworthiness category, losing some of its utility, and you make your own parts. That’s OK if you’re a vastly wealthy collector like Kermit Weeks, with support staff to get hard things done. This is by the way a really wonderful airplane that is worthy of the effort and expense...

That's really good. I intended to just pull it up and glance at it, but it hooked me and I watched all 20 minutes of it.
LOTS of good stuff in there that would help someone who is restoring an old motorcycle to understand the problems and issues you can face (like me with my 1934 Matchless), and good shop practice and organization solutions too.

That's a US pint. The English (Imperial) pint is 568.26125 ml.
The difference between a US pint and an English one is that the US pint has 16 fluid ounces, and the English pint has 20 fluid ounces. So you would think that a US pint is 0.8 of an English one in volume. Not so, because the ounces are slightly difference in size.

Gives new meaning to the Beatles lyric "All I need is a pint a day."
Especially when taken into the lesser weight of people a few years ago. In WW1 wasn't the average weight of a soldier around 115 lbs (52 kg)?
20 oz of beer would be enough for one sitting for that lad.

When it comes to the amount of beer in a glass a lot depends on the permissable 'head'. Here in ye olde England glasses were once oversized pints with a mark indicating where the fluid ended and the head began. Now nearly all glasses are a imperial pint at the brim but most folk like a head on their beer so the landlord gains by charging for the froth on top because it is no longer a full pint, which he or she is charging for. This is strctly illegal and the punter is entitled to a top up after the first gulp but like bookies the landlord usually wins.
In most of Europe any size head seems acceptable thus reducing the volume paid for even more.

Funny, in NZ when we had Imperial measurement in my misspent youth I am pretty sure that we had 16 oz in a pint and it weighed one pound.
It was a fair time ago though, and my memory is growing dim..... :undecided:

Our tire sizes today seem to be non-denominational:
17" x 180mm x 55(%). The '55' doesn't care whether the width is measured in inches or mm. It's just plain old 55 percent.

That assumption only works for water. Beer must be heavy than water for the same volume. However, I wouldn't have thought that much.

The tyre thing comes from Michelin developing the radial ply tyres, they were fitted to French cars, and fully metric, tyre and rim size. When Imperial countries picked up on the radial, they applied them to inch rim sizes. This has now come to motorcycle tyres, as they have a width and aspect ratio like car tyres these days.
When I lived on an island not far from Auckland, when a car was finished, we just drove or towed it to the tip and left it there....if someone wanted parts they took them off cars at the tip, or towed it back to their place. One day a Citroen ID19 turned up, it had a gearbox problem as they all did. I was at the tyre shop next door, and told them I was going down after work to get it. The tyre guy said ''Too late, I've already got the tyres !'' He wouldn't believe the rims were an odd size and the tyres wouldn't fit anything. A couple of days later all the windows in the ID19 were smashed making it worthless.

I must admit, tire sizes always seem crazy. Sure, if you stuck to one system, it made sense. But diff times, diff makers, diff countries, had strangely different systems.
It was always a crap shoot.
