I know that many of you have known my dad for many years and when you call are always asking me how he's doing. Well this week has not been all that great.
Thursday morning last week we almost lost him. He went white in the face and almost lost all consciousness. Ambulance took him to Lee's summit Hospital by the time they got there basically he had 0 blood pressure. They got him back up and stabilized.
Friday they found a clot in his leg but for some infuriating reason they sent him home. Primary care Dr told him yesterday to get back in the hospital so he went back yesterday and just now, after several calls and a whole lot of "WTF is going on and where is the doctor they are finally going to take him to surgery to try and get it out by dissolving it.
I can not explain how frustrated I am with the lackadaisical attitude of this hospital, but the dangers of moving him and things breaking loose is too high to change. His father died from the very same condition.
Now I'm not a real religious person so in support of him making it thru, I don't ask for prayers. I ask you to take a few extra minutes with your family this evening and just be a family. Enjoy it cause we all know it won't last forever.
Sherri Lynn and I are both lucky to have both of our parents still but we are not fooled into thinking we have forever to deal with things. Don't let life fool you.
Will let you know how things turn out.

I can empathize with your pain. Good luck

Hoping for the best, Curtis. My wife is a nurse and she often gets frustrated with the docs...

Well, Mike will get a few prayers from me. Take care Curtis. Thanks for letting us know.

Best wishes from down under.

I had the pleasure of speaking with your dad on two occasions while placing orders. A true gentleman and obviously a proud dad. I hope he makes a full recovery .
-
Best wishes. I enjoyed my lunch with him a few years ago. Planning to be by again, probably in September or early October so hope to see him again back at it at home.

Best wishes to Mike and all the Harper family. Whip those docs into shape. Your old man crusty as he is, he’s still a precious commodity.

He was ripping into them in his room and I was hitting them on the phone. They were probably ready to throw him out

Keep on those doctors / medical staff. There're quite a few who leave a lot to be desired.
I hope Mike makes a speedy recovery.

Curtis, more prayers sent from Down Under both for your Dads recovery and for the Dr's to get their sh*t together.
I cant begin to imagine your ( and your Dads ) frustration with the system.

Hope you fully recover Mr. Harper!

Hey Curtis, Glad to hear that your Dad's primary Dr was on his game advocating for him.
I know they've made great advances in what they can do now, to clean up blood clots.
Thinking of your Dad, you and your family, praying for a full and speedy recovery.

Positive and healing thoughts to Mike. Our thoughts are with the family as well. I've known Mike and have dealt with Harpers for several decades. I remember Mike being at the West Virginia Rally as a parts vendor.
-
Sorry to hear that. I hope things improve, and he gets better soon.
-
Best wishes-and give 'em hell.

Can only echo the words of others............. ..

Well, at least he's still communicating through "other" social media outlets. I was able to send him my best wishes last night. Mike's a good guy that takes good care of his dogs. Two important things in life :thumb:

Thanks everyone for sentiments. A large vein in his leg was essentially clogged from his knee to his hip. 2 hours surgery yesterday to open the vein and another 3 hours today porting and polishing and he's out and awaiting final test and tune. Couple days of observation and he should be back home. I do feel a little sorry for the nursing staff over the next couple days. How they didn't catch this over numerous visits during the past year we have NO idea, but that discussion is for another day.
-
Excellent news Curtis!

Uhh, I'll probably get in trouble for this, but the US isn't in the top 20 for quality health care, but we are number 1 on costs..
-
But it depends on what they call health care.
-
The good news is they found what was the problem.
I’m sure he will be glad to have this behind him. All the best,
Mark

Good to hear things are improving.

Curtis,
I wish I'd seen this post before I talked to you today. I bought goodies for my loop frames from your Dad when y'all brought the big rig up to Bucky's rallies in New Cumberland West(by god)Virginia many moons ago. Fond memories. Please let him know he's getting best vibes for quick healing from Virginia.

That's good that they figured out and addressed the problem. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I don’t pretend to know either one of you mate, but it’s a powerful message you convey. Sometimes you feel like grabbing these Doctors and shaking the living tripe out of them, not because they can’t always pull a rabbit out of a hat, but they can display a high and mighty attitude with peoples emotions.
Best of good fortune and thanks for the bit of a wake up..
Peter.

A thought and then a couple of observations.
Thought: I'm glad your dad is doing well and is expected to be home in a few days, that's terrific.
Observations: 1) if I understand how you've described things, your dad had a thrombectomy (removal of clot) for a deep venous thrombosis. This is not how DVTs are typically treated. In fact, it's an option pretty much reserved for a condition called phlegmasia cerulea dolens, and, even then, is not generally the standard of care. 2) if there was a misunderstanding and he didn't actually have a thrombectomy, then he likely went to interventional radiology for placement of a IVC filter (aka a greenfield filter), and then had clot in his lung (a pulmonary embolism-the reason for him going white and having "0 blood pressure") dissolved with hemolytic agents via a catheter passed from an incision in his groin. 3) in either case, he's anticoagulated (on blood thinners) and will be for life. 4) you mentioned that that is how his dad died as well. Maybe you have a hypercoagulable syndrome in your family and perhaps you and your siblings and children should be tested. There are numerous types and asymptomatic people can be carriers. 5) A bunch of docs and nurses who had never met your dad before and had nothing to do with "missing" the diagnosis, just saved your dad's life. A nicely worded letter to those who made the wrong decisions is the best way to promote positive change, but, I promise, many probably already know and are kicking themselves for their missteps.
Again, happy he's doing well.

Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
-
What Nate said. My brother had a DVT followed by a PE event. They can be hard to diagnose. Especially when the clot in the leg goes to the lungs between X rays. If it wasn't for my sister in law who twisted his arm, we might have lost him.

Curtis,
All the best for full and complete recovery.

Curtis, best wishes for you and father. Don't know either of you but do know you're a vital part of this community. Understand your dad is an old Navy man. Howdy from an old tin can/sub sailor.

I stumbled across this thread from work. Home computer sucked a virus. Tell your Dad. "Best wishes and Aloha!" I always think of you and your folks when I look at the herd.
