“I spent half my money on gambling, alcohol and wild women. The other half I wasted.”
― WC Fields
Personalized (aka vanity) plates in New Mexico are cheap, $17/yr. First time I've even gotten 'em.

I always say it this way; " the rest was squandered."
-
George Best put it...
I spent 90% of my fortune on slow horses and fast Women...
and totally squandered the rest...

Fields to bartender: "Joe, did I spend twenty dollars here last night?"
Bartender: "Yeah Bill."
Fields: "Oh. That's a load of my mind, I thought I'd lost it."
-
Say, mighty nice plates.
Did you just stuff 'em on yesterday?

I should have done that for each bike I owned. I'd have quite a collection of plates adorning my wall.
-
$17? Jeebus! They get $100 for vanity plates here. With CT DMV still only partially open, it doesn't look like the Monster is going to get a plate this year.

Yep, just came in the mail. Here, you can order 'em online, so no trip to motor vehicles office is needed.

Those NM Black Chili plates are the best looking plates around. Customized to your bikes, even better!
-
Vanity plates are cute, and some are clever, and it's like a puzzle figuring out what some of them mean ... but even at $10 extra apiece, I've never been tempted to do one ....

Vanity or not, sharp looking plates!
-
I figure that if someone really cares to know what I’m riding or driving, they can read the emblem on the vehicle.
-
Very nice plates!
I have one on my current car and many of its predecessors over decades: Ragnar. It was a nickname I gave to my youngest Viking son, Elliot, back in 1989...
-
One year I had a humorous and clever plate ready. Then I found out they cost $230 in my jurisdiction...I bought a lot of beer instead.

Adding some perspective - twenty bucks in 1930 (guessing at a possible date of that quote) is worth about $308 today.
As for vanity plates - I've never been motivated. They already get more from me than they deserve.

Jeez, aren't you the guy that was boasting of his $120 gloves a while back? Ten bucks for a personal plate don't seem like much, given the money some people spend on their bikes:)
Seriously, while I'd likely never put them on a car or truck, they might look good on a classic bike like an old Guzzi. They cost $30 up here, not sure if that's every year or a one time thing, but maybe if there's another stimulus check, will see...

Well, I don't know that I'd call it "boasting", since (as I said) I got caught short not having proper gloves on a long trip 2000 miles from home, and had to buy them in the most expensive area in the USA - West Yellowstone, WY, where a cheap-jack motel room was $250. It was painful.
You can call that "boasting" if you want. (You're not a journalist by any chance, are you? )
And regardless of how much I might spend on good gear (the amount that Fay and I spent on our last full Gore-Tex riding outfits would shock someone who didn't know what that is), I find that my priorities don't leave me with an extra $10 to spend on a custom license plate .... Besides, I can't think of anything I'd like to say with it.

Was making a joke, that's why I used the smiley face:) Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, if you were insulted by that comment, I was going to say "touting" but wasn't sure of the spelling, well I'd hate to make a serious criticism of you. No I'm not a journalist but if you were complimenting my writing style, well thanks. And have a nice day!

No doubt that I have been affected by branding--I also have Moto Guzzi hats, t-shirts (long and short sleeves), decals, tank bags, etc. because I like the brand.
I like the way the plates look, and I have spent more than I care to remember for motorcycle farkles and bling, but that's just me being me.

Rich, it’s all good. I spend frivolously on junk you’d simply shake your head at. Enjoy!

To expensive it out here. I only have one on my Daytona 1000 serial #2. " It's NO. 2". Your's look good by the way.

My WG Rule is "If you're joking, then I'm joking too. If you're NOT joking, then neither am I!" (You'll notice my little winky face to go along with your smiley face :thumb: )
That way, YOU get to choose!!

I'll tell you the job I want, and I wouldn't ask much to do it.
I want to be the guy who reviews the applications for Vanity tags, and makes sure that there's not some hidden rude meaning in them. That'd be fun!

It's the cold air, it freezes the brain, just like a frontal lobotomy. This is one of my favorites, it's the command a dog musher gives his team to pass someone, kind of a dig on somebody when you blow by'em on the hwy.

This one must have slipped by or the DMV has a sense of humor (unlikely).

In my state they sometimes make you explain it, and sometimes they don't. I didn't have to explain "B4Z" on my '66 Datsun Roadster.

My version of the W.C. Fields quote has always been, "As for me, I spent most of my money on motorcycles, the rest I just wasted."

For years I couldn't figure out why people were commenting on the Oklahoma MC license plate on an old /5 , at least once a month someone would ask how I got the state to issue me "that" plate . Finally it dawned , it read
5 GO 100

Funny - I don't see anything special in it either. What am I missing?
-

Clarifying my answer. First one is "Pee before you go" and the second one is "Sexual Deviate" although it should be deviant. I guess if you deviate from the norm then you're a deviant.

I gotta say that's pretty good. Who of us that never saw him in the day, and only see him in "highlights" of his old films playing a sour old fat drunk, would ever think he was that coordinated and athletic?

actually all of his movies had tricks and juggling. But he did in character. And I think he was often drunk, even at his best. Johnny Carson used to say Fields was considered world's greatest juggler.

Shemp Howard as the bartender. Shemp appeared in a lot of old movies after he left the Three Stooges and struck out on his own. Then Curly Howard suffered a stroke, so he re-joined his brother Moe as part of the trio.

I havent had a personalized plate, but I generally keep one or more specialty plates on my vehicles -- NCDMV has a program where you can get a specialty plate, cost a few bucks more, and the $$ goes to the Org or group that sponsored the plate... Not sure how many other states do this.
Currently on my DR650

When we were buying a new house and moving out to the country, my wife got this one for my old beater truck "A NEW START!" (only fans of a certain TV show will get this reference)

this is definitely a two track thread with little to do with the other.

Cool plates, Rich. If a vanity plate is $17, how much is a standard plate? IIRC, I paid $70-$80 for a standard plate on my '02 CalStone and each of my other plated bikes. May go for the vintage plates on my '89 TW200 and '68 CT90 next year to save some money, but I have to actually go to the BMV and sign an affidavit or some ridiculousness.

I think it is $17 to get a regular plate replaced, and that's a one-time charge. I think registration is $27-62 per year, and that depends on vehicle weight. Some things are cheap here.
