I've been involved with dog rescue since I was 12.
Animal Control, shelters, rescues, transports, training, anything I could do to help.
I adopted a Shepard mix that was set to be PTS because the adopters FALSELY claimed he was aggressive.
I volunteered to go to the home to bring him to be put down.
I lied to the rescue, that was never going to happen, he was less than a year old, I spent a lot of time with him when he
was brought into the shelter, I knew he wasn't aggressive.
Went to the home, opened up my passenger truck door, told him, Let's go Yogi!
Came running out of the house, jumped in my truck, he was home :laugh:
15 years we were together, hiked thousands of miles, new two kinds of people
new friends, or old friends, same with dogs.
This video reminds me of him.
I hope you'll find it in your heart to save a life, and adopt a best friend.

Great story!
I need to not work 60 hours a week so I can bring home a pooch from one of the local rescues. Well at least having a little extra money means I can help out, even if I don't get a new family member for couple more years.

Ours is a rescue, he was lost on the street in Oklahoma City and a group brought some rescues up to MN. after some tornado’s went through there. He’s been with us about 6 years . He missed his former owner terribly but is now stuck to Deb like she has a pork chop in her pocket. I’m ok if she is not around but she is his life.

Hey Dan, I know how much it hurts to lose a best friend. Every night I tell all my buddies we'll be together again.
Oh and the YD you use in messages and here opened my eyes. I carve those initials in birch tree bark on trails I walk.
AT, Housatonic, Pootatuck, etc. Y for Yogi, D for Dozer. I carry their ashes everywhere I go.

I'm on the east coast, so I looked into Indiana Animal Control adoptions. Good news, adoption fee are very low, and they include spay/neuter, full vaccinations, chip and heartworm testing!
Find a buddy that fits your lifestyle. Dogs, like people have their own personality. Like to hike, laid back lifestyle, jog, or whatever.
You'll be happiest doing what you both enjoy.

YD and Ncdan, I feel your pain. We lost our beloved cattle dog a couple of months ago after battling chronic hepatitis for nearly 9 years. I've never had such a smart, intuative dog as Dixie who could read my mind like a book. Our standard schnauzer, Pepper continues to wander around the house looking for his big sister. :cry:
When we are ready, we will certainly get a rescue. Thank you YD for all you do and have done and other posters for sharing your stories.

Mark, maybe volunteer at a rescue. You can take Pepper with you, give him the opportunity to interact with other playmates...
and maybe he'll find a next best friend for your family.

Rescue dogs are the best regardless of breed. My wife (the Fabulous Mrs. Wavedog) and I have been rescuing animals for most of our lives. In Arizona we were driving on a lonely desert road and there was a horse galloping out of control on the road. Its eyes were wide, mouth foaming, shod hooves slipping on the pavement. The Fabulous Mrs. Wavedog grabbed a rope from the back of our car while I drove ahead of the horse, stopped and she jumped out, threw the rope around the horses neck and hauled it to a stop. What a woman! Man that animal was spooked. She got the horse calmed and started walking it the 15 miles back to town while I drove to a ranch and got a trailer lined up to carry the horse to the vet. Got it all taken care of and eventually found the owner.
Another time we rescued a dog on that same road. It was on the side, I stopped, opened the door, and said "Come on Cholla" (I named the dog at that moment). She hopped on the seat beside me and we were best buds for many years. Turns out she was half coyote and part mutt. A very smart dog. There were many more rescue dogs. Some we found abandoned, some we got from people who couldn't keep them, some from the kill house. Tried to do the best we could for them. Got them healthy, found good homes for some and kept some. All were good dogs.

Our furbaby was adopted by our family at 5 months. Three months were spent in a shelter, and the time before that was abusive.
She was scared of little girls, doors, thresholds, sounds, raised hands, fast movement, loud noises, car rides, among others. I discovered her fear of girls in an Alabama airport when bringing her home to Arizona. She wouldn't growl at the little boys playing nearby and let them pet her, but little girls got frightened growls. We had three kids at home that couldn't wait to shower this pup with love, the youngest being our daughter.
With a lot of love and patience, she has become a wonderful part of our family.

This is Olive.
We adopted her 3.5 years ago when she was about 10 weeks old.
Here in Massachusetts it is very difficult to find puppies. But the shelter we got Olive from drives truckloads of puppies from 'down south' to MA to be adopted. Olive was what is called a "throw away puppy"... She was born in Arkansas and found in someone's front lawn only a few weeks old. Down there black puppies have no value, they can't be sold, so they are called "throw away puppies". I don't know if it's intrinsic racism or just that people don't think black dogs are as good looking as others.
Either way, when I think about where Olive started life out at, being tossed away at such an early age, enduring a long road trip in the back of a semi trailler... and I compare it to her life now... I think she's got it pretty good. :)
And I know our lives are better with her in it.

I think is time in order to have a pet you must go thru a background check and credit check , if a person is not responsible enough to pay their bills they are not responsible enough to take of a pet specially when it needs care . About six years ago our shepherd was bleeding internally trip to vet , next specialist and hospital long story short I worked over a year on sundays to paid for the bill .He lived for about 3 years after having part of his intestine remove .
I would do it all over again if I had to.
