Yeah, we've all been out getting our white goods. Bread, Milk, toilet paper. The stores have been packed.
-
The forecast changes a little, back and forth. Still, I think we're in for some freezing rain and a snow event.

Commonwealth Edison better crank up the Nuke plants tonight

I had to fire up the generator last night due to a power outage.. And this is BEFORE any icing. !!
I can't wait for the heavy stuff....

Sorry, Must be one of those "Ozark" terms... It is the root of a plant that grows straight down, making the plant difficult to pull out of the ground...

Oh, I don't know...awful lot of good riding in the Boston Mountains. The winters can be a little rough, but not as bad as well, say...Boston!

It has started snowing in earnest here...about 250 miles east of JJ

Same here. Just a few inches of snow, so far. Slippery, though.
Ya need to have an inside project on days like this, especially for the retired among us

Ahh Winter, when the perennial battle between shoveler and snowplow truck resumes. So far only 12" here but they say way more to come.
-
Yeah, you just need an inside project....I'm glad I have one as of last Saturday

Now if the new auger gearbox arrives by Monday it'll all work out ok, I think.

In regions that do not get much snow, The Weather Reporters stir up panic. The Stores and fuel stops get backed up. These event seldom last more than 36 hours. How do people in areas of the Country that get regular snow accumulations react to snow and additional snow falls? Do You all go about life like normal, or does everyone panic like it is the end of the world? Asking for a Friend.

It drives me nuts they have to name all the storms talk about them for days on end issue winter weather advisories it’s winter ❄️, it’s supposed to snow and be cold, I think everyone in my neck of the woods is well used to it by now if you watch the weather on tv you swear the worlds coming to an end. JUST MY RANT !!!

I was bitching about Winter to Ed the Rocket Scientist (RIP) and he said, "Charles.. think of all the *great* airplanes the have been built in Minnesota."
Good point, Ed. Winter is for projects.. :thumb:

I'm not saying anything.

No panic. You might see a run on beer and wine.

We all joke and say silly things about areas getting bad weather....
Until the bad weather comes to our area.

Cold and snowing since 2 pm in fly over Okla.
So far, it's a typical winter storm.
-
Three degrees with around six inches of snow. Have the fireplace going and coffee. Waiting for the NM sun to come out.

"Do You all go about life like normal, or does everyone panic like it is the end of the world?"
Growing up in NE Ohio with it's regular lake effect snow we would always go out in the storm in one or another's VW bug and do doughnuts in the school parking lot. Usually the roads were sparsely inhabited so it seemed relatively safe, at least for a 17year old high school kid.

blackcat is right...It's WINTER TIME back east, so it's all relative...    :thumb: :boozing:

Bored? Stuck home? Looking for something to do?
Go check up on elderly neighbors, If they have no power/heat, do what you can to help.
Mabe shovel their driveway/sidewalks in case they need medical help.
These are the things my parents taught me.

yeah we heard it all before you keep the snow on top of the mountains. :)

Ooooh, I did that on my blower attachment. Chewed the snot out of the ring gear, then broke it. Lucky I had another gearbox in inventory. Note to self, don't use grade 5 bolts on the augers instead of the proprietary shear bolts.

The birds have really been putting on a show today. These happen to be mostly male and female purple finches, along with some house finches and yellow finches.

The wind and a little snow is out of the North, and this window faces South. I'm assuming they are sitting here just to get out of the wind. There have also been sparrows of course, Cardinals, doves, a bluejay, among others. Juncos on the ground. Red bellied and Downy woodpeckers, nuthatches.
Worked on the airplane project today, too. Life is good.

Hey Larry,
FWIW, your grade 5 bolts may not have had anything to do with your gearbox failure although I'd advocate using the recommended pins. My thrower had all the original auger shear pins when it failed. Upon disassembly I found the unit had lube in it but who knows if it was an adequate amount. The owners manual offers no routine maintenance on the GB like periodic lubrication, etc. Plus, the bushings and seals were toast too. Oh well.

And the new W800 slumbers on in the garage ................... !!

Now we have a dove tree. They're even hanging out on Mr. Dragonfly..

reloaded our feeders and our second wheel of suet.
Flyover Okla has about 5 inches and cold wind. Not expected to get to single digits but lots of wind. Hopefully, it will be our typical winter snap. 65 a week from now. Late Feb is usually pretty nice, so I hope it will be normal.
-
^^^^ Late February is normally the worst here.. but I think "normal" doesn't apply any more. <shrug>

You are lucky your birds are outdoors. Ice storm here east of Dallas. Power went out about 3:30 am. At 4:00 am, our African Grey Parrot started SCREAMING about the lack of heat. Then the smoke alarms all went off.
Then she really lost it.

Dang Swede, I hope you're staying warm. I thought they fixed the power south of the Red River? It's just a typical winter storm. Even for DFW. I think your smoke alarms need new batteries.
Since you're online, I'm guessing it's just a short outage due to some downed power lines from freezing rain?
Anyway, I'm not driving tonight. Went to the grocery store in the Trooper but got home before dark. I think my kid's Focus RS was too close to the ground, so I took him to the grocery store. The roads haven't been plowed but luckily it's a few inches of snow and not much ice. I think he'd have made it there with no issue.
-
Seven degrees here this morning. A thin layer of ice under ten inches of snow.
We have a walk-out basement (where the little motorcycles live) and there's a three foot snow drift against the door.
It appears that we will be working on the "inside" projects today.
:boozing:
-
15" - 18" last week, and we're looking at almost another foot on the ground this morning, and it's still snowing.
We'll be pushing close to 3 feet in 10 days, methinks.
Winter in central Maine.......
At least it isn't ice!
Back in'98, (Man, does THAT make me sound old!), we had an ice storm that went on for days.
About 4" of ICE. We were without power for 11 days straight. Not much fun at the time, but
GREAT stories and memories!

and a noticable increase in 25-year-old Maine residents!

Almost an inch in the Louisville Metro area. Mostly ice with a top layer of snow. No Storm, No crisis here.
-
Woke up today at 60* & no snow yet.
-
Just rain in middle NC but it did melt the snow that’s been hanging around the past few weeks.
-
It went south of us happily. I was still trying to decide if I was going to hide under the bed or in the closet after watching the tv weather forecast. It’s just winter but they sure had dire predictions, fear porn to the max.
-
The robins have returned to central IL. Apparently they never really leave, well supposedlly some do, but they go somewhere where we cant see them every fall, and come back around this time of year. Personally, if I were one, I would wait till at least mid April.

Damn ice storm and one of the tars slid off the roof on my doublewide. Didn't hit a dog. Life is good!
-
You got a double wide??
Showoff.
-
The snow got here yesterday.
Plowed 8 inches about 10 last night.
Plowed about 8 more today.
This is our second snow fall, and none of the first storm melted before this one. Piles of snow are getting high.

We will see huge flocks of them down here on the Gulf Coast in the early spring eating berries off some of the trees. Like hundreds of them will descend on a tree and pretty much strip the whole thing of berries then move on to another tree. Fun to watch, and quite a bit of noise.
