No, I have 13 hours on it now. It's a scratch built ultralight (wood wings, 4130 fuselage, aluminum tail, all fabric covered) called a "Legal Eagle."
Powerplant is a 3 cylinder Verner from the Czech Republic.. 42 thundering horsepower supplemented with a stick bird from John A.
-
Damn it Chuck quit making me drool. That thing looks like just plain fun. Do you hang an elbow out the "window"?
GliderJohn
-
Very cool.
-
I do see the Guzzi content.
I’ve always thought that motorcyclists are just pilots on a budget.
-
Way cool! Would like to see a full photo of the entire plane...(please?)
-
WAAAAY Cool Chuck!! Glad to see you've slipped the surly bonds of earth by your own devices. Congrats! :thumb: :boozing:

Like most mortals, I envy you.

Took me a while to find the very small Guzzi content and then I saw the eagle on the dash , well done

Sure thing, JJ. Here, I had just brought the observation ship back from a sortie over the Western front. No enemy ships or balloons spotted.

Yes, yes I do.

Where are the cup holders?

That's just FABULOUS!! Thanks, Chuck! You are a creative and very brave man! :thumb:  :boozing:

What’s the gas mileage and cruising speed?
-
That is so cool!! Ive never seen one of those engines before.
-
Sweet, you must have fixed the fuel leak.

Very cool. Hopefully you have a leather helmet, googles, and a scarf to wear while flying.....
-
Whoa! Chuck, you're batman! :thumb:
-
What’s the gas mileage and cruising speed?
Depends on rpm, but 57 mph at 2050 about 2 gallons per hour.
Very cool. Hopefully you have a leather helmet, googles, and a scarf to wear while flying.....
Of course. The goggles aren't necessary, though. The scarf keeps the shoulder harness from chafing my delicate neck, and the helmet keeps my hairstyle from getting disarranged so I can chat up the ladies in the pub after a mission.

Hopefully we'll see some nose art in the future

I was going to ask about radios and ceiling limits, but now that I've seen the aircraft, I withdraw the question.
Instead I will ask, "Who was your aircraft mentor?".
-
Nice!
-
How's the weather in Tipperary this time of year?
Seriously- that is awesome.
-
You bastard Chuck…
I fly Pawnees, Cessna’s, CSU retract endorsement, Unrestricted PPL with glider instructor rating with 2,000 hrs and thought I was having fun…
Now I know I’ve done nothing…
I REALLY want to fly something like that. I find you incredible, to build and fly it is enchanting.
Your attention to detail is Canuck 750 esque.
Crazy, classy madness… :thumb:

That's an interesting question, Norman. Marlin Gibson, "Giibby" a first generation aircraft mechanic, took me under his wing so to speak. As usual with me, when I get interested in something, I want to learn all I can about it. He looked over my shoulder when I built my first airplane in the early 60s. During that time, the EAA published "Engineering for the amateur builder" by Raoul Hoffman, Matty Laird's chief engineer.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raoul_Hoffman
I learned a lot from both of those guys.
This is my 7th and most likely last airplane project.. :undecided: but it's been a good run.

Thankya, Huzo.. Thankya. To be put in the same sentence as our Canuckistanian is high praise, indeed. Over my (gasp) 65 years of flying, I've been fortunate to fly a *lot* of different aircraft.. antiques, homebuilts, two place putt putts up through several twins. I've flown all over the country, and one memorable trip to southern Mexico. One of my best friends was a professional pilot, so that is where the twin stuff came from. He's the guy I built the Great Lakes for.
That said, I'm having more fun with this little booger than I can remember. The Pitts was a hoot, but it was demanding. I can just hop in Bullet in t shirt and shorts, and cruise around just high enough to keep from hitting something, and enjoy operating a pure "stick and rudder" flying machine.
Here's my old friend Mike flying Bullet. Just a crappy sell fone video by an inexperienced operator..

oh my.

Oh that is super cool! Can you mount a machine gun on it? That would be extra fun!

Naa, too heavy. It's just an observation ship..Gotta keep it as light as possible, ya know.

What’s the maximum cockpit weight with full fuel Chuck ?

OK, how about maybe a Ruger 1022?
-

Gross weight includes a 275 pilot and 30 lbs. of fuel.

That’s pretty decent for such a lightweight.

Yeah, as you can see from the takeoff run, Bullet (as in slower than a speeding) has weight carrying ability to spare..

How is that turn from the taxiway to the takeoff run achieved? Is the rear wheel steerable? Do you brake one of the front wheels?
-
 Amazing.

I see that there are disc brakes on the mains and no doubt differential braking.

yes.

That is SOOO cool......
Like everybody else on this forum, I want one!
I'd need a bigger place though. It's STOL, but not THAT STOL.

“You think you’re the coolest dude at bike night, and then this guy shows up….!”
Sounds awesome!! Leather helmet and googles? WW2 insignia? Do you yell ‘CLEAR’!…….
Found some internet inspiration….

I used to help with a small rally many years ago. The star was a guy with a Star Shooter stunt type plane doing fly overs doing rolls etc just off the deck. He threw out a few flour bombs on the group for good measure. He came by later, I told him that there was an FAA inspector in the crowd. The color drained from his face. I then told him the guy didn't care. We also had a howitzer that fired bowling balls out of sight. Fun times.

You picked the correct motor, much better sounding than any twin for it's purpose.

Yeah, that is a lot of the fun with this thing. I have enough VW stuff laying around that I could have built a half VW for practically free. (Guzzi content) I was out in SoCal hanging out with Mark at MG Classics talking about it and how expensive the little radial was. He said, "You planning on putting that money in your casket with you? You going to be eating beenie weenies for a couple of years if you get it?" "Good point, Mark.."
It has a lot of character, and easily pulls a big prop. What's not to like?
-

Yeah yeah Chuck, that's what they all say.   Then again, what would Dorcia say.......

I looked at the price, if it continuously performs, worth the price. Makes the plane. Hey, you can use it in another plane.
-
I can't really add praise here. So I'll ask a question that weighs on me. Given that motor, and except for the instruments, is there anything else in your plane that could not have been built in the 1920's? It is amazing.

And really nothing sounds as good as a radial!!

Nope, what I envisioned when I started this project was "very early aeroplane." It has a more modern airfoil (30s) and some aerodynamic improvements from that time, but it is built with classic techniques. The powerplant is the major improvement.

Yeah, it's gone up $1300 since I got mine. Still, not bad considering the price of new aircraft engines.
-

Yeah until you are working next to the test cell. It gets old after a couple of hours. However I was camped in the California Central Valley a couple of weeks ago, one of the ag planes was running a radial. Beautiful music compared to the turbo props. :azn:

I admire the work and dedication it took to build it to completion . It turned out quite well, didn’t it?

Yeah, it turned out about like I envisioned, and flies better than I expected. Thanks for the stick bird.. It was 2 years of pretty steady work during the plague that cannot be mentioned. I could have finished it last summer, but then what would I have done last Winter? First flight was an unusual warm and calm day in Feb.

Very cool!
