Title: Lonelec + GuzziDiag Fun Times
Post by: Haioku_Mantan on June 25, 2025, 09:36:09 AM
I recently purchased the GuzziDiag kit (#LEZBGUZKIT01) for my Guzzi and tried it out today but was not getting a connection. I did try downloading the FTDI drivers and the blue LED does show a connection but when I try to initialize the reader or even GuzziDiag, the RX/TX flashes a few times and then shows no connection and asks me to close the program.

I tried tracing the connectors using a multimeter and whilst the DC barrel jack shows connectivity on pin 4+5 on the 16pin connector, only pin 1 (on the three pin plug) shows connectivity to pin 15. (Pin 1 is the leftmost of the pair next to the vertical bar 0 0 | 0)

Will try out the exact steps as mentioned in the post: https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=107741.0

1 -- connect the Lonelec 3-pin to the diagnostic 3-pin
2 -- connect the Lonelec Black and Red clips to battery power (I use a separate battery)
3 -- connect the Lonelec USB plug to the computer (you should hear the familiar jingle)
4 -- verify the Lonelec COM number in Windows Device Manager (often COM4)
5 -- start GD
6 -- verify GD shows your ECU model in the bottom left box
7 -- select/re-select the COM number in Preferences
8 -- now click Connect and wait for the Ignition prompt
9 -- turn ignition On, wait 15 seconds, and press Ok

After a few seconds, GD should fill in the bottom left box with configuration information about your ECU.

If this doesn't work then I may have a wonky connector.
Have reached out to Lonelec - I'll see what they say.

You may have to keep trying by alternating different COM ports, i.e. USB connections.

First time connection has been problematic, but is usually solved by picking another USB connection and on the drop down box switching from COM1 to COM3.

Update time

1) Tried selecting all three types of Norge (G, GT, GTL) and going through the startup process many times. Using GuzziDiag v6.0 on a Dell XPS laptop. Have two USB ports, both working with other USB devices including Bluetooth.
2) Have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled using the FTDI install exe couple of times
3) IAWDiag works, RX and TX passed.
4) Both GuzziDiag and IAW5xReader do not connect.
5) Have set the FTDI COM port latency to 1ms in Adavanced Port Settings as suggested on the GuzziDiag page
6) COM5 shows up as a USB Serial Port correctly when Lonelec USB is plugged in
7) Tried switching ports between each shutdown of IAWReader and GuzziDiag (never had both open at the same time either)

Everything points to the laptop just not liking the USB connector or not communicating with it even with the correct drivers installed.
Last ditch effort is to a) try a USB hub and connect through that b) borrow a buddy's laptop and see if I get the same result.

I was unable to find the older drivers as suggested on the GuzziDiag page as they only support up to Win XP and I'm running Win 10+ on the XPS.

.. try a USB hub and connect through that ..
Usually makes matters worse, as there is then an intermediary device.

Boot Linux Mint from an USB pendrive and try that - no need to install, for testing. Will take longer to boot than from internal storage though does give you something else to try. No faffing about with silly Windoze drivers.

(The only gotcha that I had an issue with, was editing the ini file to manually add /dev/ttyUSB0 as the port to use. By booting from USB, you probably need to change this to /dev/ttyUSB1)

So got a bootable Mint ISO running on a thumbdrive (Xfce and Cinnamon flavored) and added the user to the dialout group etc (https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=84489.0)
Downloaded all the Linux versions of the software - everything except GuzziDiag x64/x86 works.
Gives the unknown file type error and both Cinnamon and Xfce don't want to open it. Something is wrong with the file or named incorrectly.
Ended up backtracking to von der Salierburg's GuzziDiag site and changing the https://www.von-der-salierburg.de/download/GuzziDiag/GuzziDiag_V0.60_x64.tgz link to the v0.50 version which runs and works.

Next up is connecting to the bike tomorrow and seeing if I can pull the map and some engine data off it.

At least you are progressing. Presumably you uncompressed the tgz file before trying to execute/run it.
My daily use laptop runs Cinnamon though I do run Xfce on older ones. ;-)

Size check for v0.60
871.0kB
368.8kB compressed tgz

Quick note to anyone trying to run the new Linux file - you might need to do "chmod +x filename" to make it executable.

..run the new Linux file - you might need to do "chmod +x filename" to make it executable.
Alternatively, the File Manager should allow you to change permissions to make it executable.
I forget and do this stuff without thinking, from the command prompt (shell) usually.

Presumably you now have GuzziDiag working?

Got it working on a Windows laptop in the end.
Now am trying to figure out how to balance my TB on a Norge as the screws are not as accessible as other models.

I no longer have access to a PC or Apple laptop, is there any other way to use GuzziDiag short of dragging my Mac out to the garage?

Cheap 8-10" tablet running windows. About $100 on the bay of fleas or the river site. I have 2, one is Win7 and the other is 10, both run GD.

Cheap 8-10" tablet ..
This week, I bought a perfectly running lightweight Toshiba Z930 laptop (to act as a donor for my daily driver), for £47 at the first place mentioned. Has Win10, not that I'll use that much unless no choice. Bargain!
