I bought the red 2007 Norge that has been on e-Bay for a week. It is in Oregon, so I am flying up there to drive it back to Orem on Monday.
I will be selling the silver one, but I need to fix the fork seals first.

There always seems to be one or two beautiful white Norges for sale in northern New England that I keep pushing my friends toward.
-
Red ones are faster.
-
I see the big AK sticker, is PO someone from my neck o the woods?
-
Congratulations.
It's got the unobtanium Stucchi crash bars.
-
Congrats! Red ones ARE the fastest. Saw a red one at last Sunday's IMOC rally with the same crash bars.
-
Selling a silver one, and bought a red one? May I ask why?
-
Because
Red ones ARE the fastest.

Because it’s….RED.
I mean, why wouldn’t you ?

That was Matt Matteo of Anchorage, formerly from Oregon. The bike made it's way back down to another of the Oregon faithful.

I thought so, not familiar with that bike, but he just came back from L48 up the Alcan a few weeks ago. Thanx!

The original owner was in Alaska, it has been somewhat troubling because people keep asking me about Alaska

I drove it from Portland to Orem Monday and Tuesday. I made the mistake of overdoing it the first day rather than split it into halves. I got back to work by noon, but driving the last 160 miles to Burley in the cold and dark at 95mph was brutal.
I also made the mistake in Portland of asking my cell phone by voice to take me to Hiway 84 toward The Dalles and it took me to 84th Avenue, Portland. Took me a few U turns before I realized there was no freeway, and it lost me 45 minutes.

As for the bike, there were some nice surprises. The higher windshield was worthwhile. Driving up the gorge I decided to put my visor up to enhance the smells of nature, and it was already up, no no wind against my face. Still got lots of bugs on my jacket, though.
Also, the bike has handlebar risers. I was shocked that I never had any back muscle tiredness, which is an issue with the other bike and my BMW.
It doesn't have any enhancement of the MAP, whereas my other Norge has had the Beetle map from day one. So I will compare the bikes to see if I can tell the difference.
It also has lowered pegs, which I didn't notice until I was bumping the center stand on mountain curves.
Fortunately I didn't have an opportunity to try out the crash bars, but they are a nice feature.

I really wish they made a GEN2 in that red. LOVE those Stucchi (sp?) crash bars.
Glad you made it back safely.

My silver Norge has a tendency to roast my left calf when the weather is just right. The red one roasts both calves. I don't know what is going on there, maybe it has to to do with the crash bars. Nice in the cold night air, though.
-
The red Norge has a loud buzzing with resonances at about 2500 and 3800 RPM. Any ideas?

As a new owner, I'd run through it. New plugs (outer & Inner) Valve Adjustment and TB Balance. May also need to go over all the fasteners, crash bars, etc.

Good advice. This is what I did when I first bought the silver one, and I know how to do it faster this time without breaking off the gas fitting, etc.

Also, grease everything…
I bumped an old Norge servicing thread.

Saturday I took both bikes up the canyon for a comparison. (one at a time).
The new bike idles very rough, but at 1200 rpm. It has plenty of power but
engine vibration is high compared with the old one.
So next Saturday I'll start with the inner spark plugs and throttle body.
Test it again and see where it goes.

Strange thing, the service log says that about 10 years ago the first owner "bypassed the stepper motor."
Is that a thing? I thought it was needed for idle stability.

Yes it is.

Yes it is. Why disable it? And should I think about restoring it?

Some disable it when it gets 'sticky' it's easily removable for cleaning, but I would buy a bottle of that Seafoam upper cyl spray (for fogging and cleaning intake track), take it out and give it a good cleaning. Or depending on what they did to disable, you could reconnect everything and use Guzzi Diag to cycle it on and off. You can run without it, but it is helpful. Is basically an air bypass valve over the intake throttle plates. Some have put in an adjustable ball valve to manually control it. I'd prefer it worked properly. Biggest thing it does is to increase idle speed when in gear and letting off the throttle to help keep from stalling.
I oil it and spray some of that seafoam cleaner at every oil change as preventative maintenance, then use GD to cycle the motor to ensure it is working well. They all get sticky over time and need cleaning. I like the seafoam because it isn't very caustic, cleans and frees things up, but doesn't leave too much oil to make things sticky.

Thanks, it might explain why I have stalled when starting off, and the rough idle.

You can cycle it using Guzzidiag.

I've always loved the Norge from the first time I laid eyes on one. The ONLY think that kept me from buying one is the lack of cruise control. I will never understand how they could make such a beautiful touring bike with no cruise. I still feel that killed a lot of sales.

There is a good aftermarket one available.

Funny, I'm the complete opposite, but I do so little super slab that a CC makes no sense for me. Thankfully, my arthritis is in the left arm so far, but time will tell. Even though, I spend 90% of my time on roads that CC would be unused. FWIW, I find that the throttle springs are light and just a little pressure on the grip with the heel of my hand on the bar weight is enough to hold the throttle stable if I need to emulate CC.
I did add a throttle lock on my FJR that replaced the bar end weight. You could twist it and by friction it would hold the throttle stable. I only used it 1-2X. There are many aftermarket units and styles.

I put one of these throttle brakes on my BMW 10 years ago. The nylon friction ring shrank and no longer engages, so I have forgotten all about it being there.
Is there a true speed control available or just the clamps?

There was an Australian one a few years back.
