Title: Minimalist/non traditional Thanksgiving faves
Post by: oldbike54 on November 25, 2015, 07:40:43 PM
Being a minimalist by nature , the traditional Thanksgiving variety fest is a bit overwhelming . Give me a plate with dressing , a smattering of mashed potatoes or yams , and a couple of deviled eggs , followed by a piece of pie and I am a happy camper . Then later on , a plate of simple nachos , and maybe a nice ravioli . Oh , and some greens to munch on during the lulls .

Anyone else happy with a simple nontraditional Thanksgiving ?

Nope, I want cornbread dressing, candied yams, creamed spinach, cranberry, rolls of some kind, Ham or Turkey and pumpkin pie or apple pie...to get me started. ;-)

I don't want to make you all feel guilty, but maintaining my 1960s racing weight of sub-140# does not come without effort.

Villa Glorioso tomorrow will be resplendent with the enticing odors of Trader Joe's organic, whole wheat pasta, Ragu chunky mushroom sauce with a pound of diced mixed vegetables mixed in.  A few baked yams on the side will add to the gastronomic intrigue..

Libation will be limited to a few oz of Franzia "Chillable Red" box wine.

Gourmet cook bpreynolds of this forum probably will not be amused, but I'll save a bowl for him should the temptation to sample my wares prove irresistible.

Bon appetit.

Ralph

Dusty,

Ok buddy, we picked up one of the Food Editors for Buzz-feed today (eldest daughter from NYC).  And youngest daughters.

Nope.  Uh-uh.

We opted for a local celebrity chef catered meal and picked it up a couple hours ago.  A true feast.  No cooking, no clean up and cornbread/sage dressing (very important). Pecan pie, of course as this is TEXAS.

And get this, six, count them six bottles of California sparkling wine, and one French Champagne.  We will start with mimosas and various breakfast items and parades tomorrow.  Sometime around 2 pm we will indulge the main feast.  Daughters insisted.  Wow it is loud around here, but fun and poodles in ecstasy having entire pack here.

No deviled eggs though...dang I love those things.  Jealous am I (Yoda).

Anyway, blessings and Thanks to all members here on Wildgoose.  This forum and members are special folks.  Enjoy the day.

I am buzzed a bit on Talisker Scotch:  part of my retirement gift from my Ewing Bank Team.  Good people all.

Got the boots issue fixed.  More later on that.  Thankful I am .

Always had alder-wood smoked salmon in Anchorage, and a fine Chardonnay and asparagus and local bread and perhaps chocolate and Port.

Good times.  Dark and cold and Alaska

Ralph , my racing weight was about 165 lbs , and mostly that has been maintained , although during my time in the military 175 lbs was normal . Of course some of that 165 is in different places than it was years ago  Seems maybe I represent Joe Leonard , and you represent Carol Resweber

  Dusty

Edit . In no way am I making a claim to be ANYWHERE near as fast as Joe Leonard , probably closer in speed to Uncle Joe from Petticoat Junction  :embarrassed:

I'l have a few pieces of lightly sauteed tofu on a bed of roasted turnip greens. For dessert it will be some pumpkin pie spice put on an ice cube. Man, it is a hard job keeping a svelte figure.

Hate to disappoint but we are in steep preparation for departing tomorrow (Friday) to visit the wife's folks in Florida for a week; thus, no cooking of any kind will take place at the Reynolds abode today.  This being said, however, I do plan to "get cooking" on packing and other things needing attention prior to departure.  Wish us luck maneuvering the post Thanksgiving crowd tomorrow at the airport  :boxing:

Cookie and I are having pork loin instead of turkey, but will have the traditional sides of yams and green  bean casserole. Some kind of wine. Some kind of IPA. Some kind of weed.
4 days of work in late November always seems like a waste of googing off daysto me.

I have not been sub #140 lbs since grade school.  Even when I was riding bicycles between 100 and 200 miles a week I weighed 205.  I would ride with a group of guys in the Potomac Peddlers they called the Clydesdale's.

Just made a calzone and meatball/spinach pizza, decidedly tastier than turkey imho.

Tomorrow's lutefisk night with the good ol' boys.
Lutefisk, boiled potatoes, mashed green peas, lutefisk, bacon cubes, bacon fat, lutefisk, a good akevitt, good pilsner, and of course lots of lutefisk. Served twice.
Remember, eating fish is good for you!

What the heck, go for broke; they're only $1.99.  Splurge for two.  That way you can have some traditional leftovers Friday.

Ralph , have you ever met Ken and watched him eat ? At JN Smyth's memorial service the nice ladies at the church who provided a wonderful meal almost asked Ken to leave after he asked to take home the leftovers

I forgot my camera so I couldn't take pictures of Tex and his "lite lunch", (my daughter took this one) but, do you see any gravy stains or BBQ sauce or blackberry cobbler or pumpkin pie stains on his nice shirt?  No you don't.  Well, then, don't question what he tells you.  Look at that sweet, innocent face; you don't think he'd be telling you any sea stories, do you?  It's hard to keep that svelte figure, but somehow he manages.
