All,
Busy and productive day: poodle walk, working on class paper, finished reading, research, various business, and then a core workout at gym. Grilled burgers and now finishing a bit of Macallan's Scotch. It was a gift, and the simple taste is ok, but not great to me: sherry sweet notes. I prefer the more salty and tangy and peat Scotch.
So, what should I buy to replace the Macallan's?
Guzzi ride tomorrow, I hope.

:1: Laphroaig get my vote if you like peat. Goes exceptionally well with German chocolate cake and or chocolate cake w/ peanut butter icing.

Try some Glen morangie.
They have 5 or 6 "flavors".
I'm a fan of the port finish quinta ruban

My current pick would be Balvenie, specifically this one (14 y/o Caribbean Rum Cask Conditioned):

Though if you wanted something locally produced I've enjoyed some products from Balcones:

All,
LMFAO....will go see what the local liquid warehouse has this afternoon. 62nd birthday is very near. Gift for myself. Can I get myself to spend the $$$$ for an older, more exotic Scotch? You see, my grandfather, Charles Stewart, hailing from Glasgow, still shakes his finger at me, but in this case he might nod and smile? Great suggestions!

HAAA!
"wee drams. . ."
I read it as "wee dreams" & thought you were dreaming about having to go, or maybe something a little more Freudian.
and so the same can be said for my mis-read.

Nice and Peaty but only for the first few shots after that switch to the cheap stuff and save money for Guzzi parts.

Look, so long as it's from Scotland, OK? It's bad enough that the US now claims to make decent beer without you also claiming to make decent whisky!

I'm not too fond of those heavily sherried whiskies. Those bottles seem to last. The two that disappear far too quickly are Highland Park 12 and Balvenie Doublewood. Always on the lookout for a good inexpensive blend. JW Black is good but getting pricy. Black Bottle is not bad. Any recommendations?

I spent a good deal of time in Scotland long ago...and a glasgoian once told me " We send Glen Levit and such to you yanks and we keep the Glen Morangie for ourselves!! The 10-12 year old is excellent....this is of the hook!

And here are what the poodles bought me for my birthday:

Old Pulteney is a perennial favorite: salty sea tang, balanced, long finish. Friend from Aberdeen, North Sea, Scotland turned me on to OP. He is now in Cairo.
The Ardbeg should be interesting: earthy peaty. Looked for some older Talisker, none locally.
Were planning on having close friends over for a phenomenal dinner tonight at the Villa. Apocalyptic rains in Houston flooded everything again, so cancelled. Also had to cancel a planned Alaska trip for late June. Too much going on with family concerns and my mother in Colorado seems to be falling apart again.
Bought myself some bicycling shorts for my birthday.
Sipping some of the Pulteney now, and we have carrot cake for dessert. Alzheimer's clinic is grim, as always.
62 tomorrow. No ride likely as weather continues very unbalanced. I need some desert time.

When I left a job about 7 years ago my boss gave me a bottle of Glenmorangie.
It gets hauled out on really special occasions, such as when the All Blacks won the World Cup (X2 :thumb:) when I retired etc. I still have about 2/3 of the bottle left. As I said, it is for REALLY special occasions.
If the Thunder win the comp. Dusty, it will take another hit then. :thumb:

Agreed!! Nothing better

L.D. When you said salty I wanted to suggest Pultney, you might enjoy Springbank 10 yr old if you enjoy the peat levels of Talisker and Ardbeg. Specs downtown Houston should have the other Taliskers you had in mind. I`'ll send a pmail⦠'re: a few wee drams, I live in Crosby, across town from you.
-
I prefer Glenmorangie 10 year to just about anything else. It's not cheap but it's less than lots of single malt.
But I ain't picky if you're buying.

Canadian Club.
Damn right your Dad drank it!
