Hi all . Hoping not to disturb from other side of the Pond.
I may, or may not ask stupid questions :-). At the moment I'm trying to figure my costs.

Engine out.. chrome cylinders - bad. No flaking - good.

Electric is to me the biggest issue I guess. Well see, sometime around year 2025
It will take some time until done, I'm sure

Congrats looks like a fun project

It will make a nice machine. If that Citroen is yours you've got a great vehicle there as well. I've owned a DS21 saloon and two DS 23 Safaris in the past and they have to be among the best cars I've had.
-
Not bad at all.
I would say about $1500US could get the cylinders and some chrome bits to replace the nasty ones.

Welcome Roy!
Electrics are the easy part. Greg Bender makes excellent wiring harnesses:
http://www.thisoldtractor.com/for_sale_wiring_harness_loop.html
You can rebuild the original generator or go with a Scrambler Cycle alternator kit:
http://scramblercycle.highwire.com/product/moto-guzzi-loopframe-generator-to-alternator-conversion-kit
The Bosch starter is very durable and can be rebuilt. Or, replace it with a Valeo/Valeo "clone".
The ignition switch, starter button, fuseblock, brake switch, etc. are all available new.
-
I would get a new harness and start fresh, plus you'll have parts. Price? It all depends on how pretty you want it and how much time you invest. Don't think you will ever get all your money returned. Good Luck.
-
The biggest expense will be new jugs and pistons to replace the chrome bores but then it will be like a near new motor,
Valves and guides if it's high mileage 100k or more
Drive shaft universal can be refreshed
Seal kit
Gasket kit
A Greg Bender harness if you want to keep it stock
You will be surprised how well the pipes and mufflers clean up, run with what you've got until something better turns up.
I would just paint over the rusty chrome with some sort of rust preventer in silver or black.
I used black POR15 on the crash bars.
For <$2,000 you will have a nice rider
I can guarantee one thing, more grins per mile than any modern Guzzi
Actually two things, more conversations started by strangers admiring the old girl.
-
You would not believe the wave of memories those pictures bring me - thank you, [RoyRogers].
You're going to love that machine.
-
Valves and guides if it's high mileage 100k or more
In my experience, the guides and valves are both significantly worn by 30k miles. New valves are only $28 ea., it's false economy to not replace them.
-
Cost is determined by what level you want the machine to be at, lots of people scrimp where you cant see and spend big on what you can, I like them when they are shiny on the inside first. That way the function of the machine wont let you down. DonG

 You have forgotten more than I will ever know about these machines, my 130k miles Eldo may have been done several times of course.
I just noticed the 4 leading shoes on the front wheel
What year did that happen Charlie?

Why did I completely miss its an 850 GT?

For the US, mid-'73, but the Europeans got them a bit earlier I suspect.

Welcome to WG, RR. That 4 shoe front end is more than likely worth more than you paid for the whole bike. :thumb:
-
In the first photo I see some nice garage art, the black background with yellow letters California license plates circa 1963-70. And some from Illinois. Made it all the way to Norway, fantastic.

Nice project, welcome aboard!

Hej og velkommen til fra Danmark! Been to your beautiful country many times and hiked both Hardangervidda and Jotunheimen
That's going to be a very nice project for the long Norwegian Winter(s).
What's the plan? Complete rebuild to mint condition or will you just fix mechanics and electrics and run it as a visual unrestored bike? I would tend towards the latter if I were you, it has potential to be an eye catcher no matter what you decide.
As for spares I can recommend stein-dinse.biz which is reasonable with price and shipping and also hmb-guzzi.de, both located in Germany but communicates well in English too.

It's very important on these engines to pull the crank and clean out the sludge trap. If it gets clogged, bad things happen to the end bearings.

Hi and Thanks a lot, overwhelming sum of answers here.
She (it's a She!) will probably look at lot better inside than outside . (Motto: Rust are the new Chrome)..or something like that. My findings so far: Chrome cylinder = renewal. Valves and Guides..to be checked. Frame..Good.
Drive shaft an Co. .Looking good. Front fork..yet to inspect..Brakes, not much wear, but function are..hmm..not good. Have to be inspected and adjusted..
Og takk til Danmark . Your welcome visiting, (you all are of course, but most of you don't live i my neighborhood).
Thank again to all of you. I'll be back!
! will be away for work a few days, so no news until next week.
Oh, and I have also one more in the works;

Steering lock is available from various sources, it the same as some BMWs.

Brake light switch:

Those do look like the factory saddlebags.

Thank you very much, Charlie

Not my garage, PO's. There are thousands of (old classic) cars and bikes imported from the US to Norway. Some collect cars, some collects plates

There are some specialist firms in the UK who can re plate your old chrome bores.
I’m no expert on the subject but came across this topic:

Replating is a good way to go if the pistons are still within specs., not scored and are reusable. But, if you have to buy pistons, then the overall cost is the virtually the same as Gilardoni kits.
-
I have looked into replating, but it will be to expensive. Freight cost prohibits....aaand, in Norway replating have exactly the same cost as a complete Gilardoni-set.
And with everything new..I sleep better

Visiting a gearbox specialist Saturday..
I asked him to replace a few false and destroyed parts..
Nut at the left is incorrect, on the right is correct. The left one was to "short" sitting
to low, meaning..no chance to get that sh.. out. A newly made special socket made it possible to remove, was necessary to apply a light pressure in the tool so be sure it didn't slip

You can't use the left one on the right side an vice versa. Threads
are the same, (when you hold them together they fit in another)

More to follow
