Title: What is your city, county or area best know for?
Post by: willowstreetguzziguy on October 27, 2018, 02:08:09 PM
We live in Lancaster County Amish Country, home of the Amish, Smorgasbords, Shoe fly pie, Potato chips, Soft Pretzels, Covered Bridges, Conestoga wagon, Pennsylvania long rifle, York Barbell, Harley Davidson York factory, birthplace of Robert Fulton (invented steamboat), Farmland and ...Horse Poop on the roads! Great backroad riding but BEWARE of that slippery stuff on the roads!

I've been to Lancaster, beautiful area.

I'm in Springfield, Mo. Birthplace of Route 66 and Bass Pro Shops. We have Amish all around here too. Wild Bill Hickock shot a dude from all the way across the town square over a pocket watch lost in a poker game and Greene County also had the westernmost battle in the Civil War. The Springfield wagon was built here, it was a sought after rig during the wagon train days. We also had the Frisco Railway shop here. It was a rowdy western town in it's day. (I didn't talk about guns did I?)

I live in the Piedmont triad (WINSTON-SALEM NC). We are famous for several things. A couple are R.J Reynolds tobacco co, Texas Pete, OLD SALEM settlement, founded in 1766. George Washington stayed in the Inn, which a meal from the era can still be had there. I live 3-4 hours from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and 2 hours from some of the most beautiful mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway. Only problem is here in the Piedmont Triad,  it's growing into a metropolis with Little open country.

Stoke on Trent England is the home of the English ceramics industry  most famous brands Wedgewood, Royal Doulton,  Spode and many more, no longer the powerhouse it used to be but the history surrounds us.

Hershey -- best known for chocolate (which is mediocre, IMHO), and Hersheypark.

In our region:
Harrisburg, which is the state capital
Three Mile Island -- site of the March, 1979 nuclear reactor incident -- the radiation release was real, there is a very high incidence of thyroid problems among people who lived here at the time.
Amish, they're not just in Lancaster County.    They're also in Lebanon, Perry, and other surrounding counties.

History! Civil War battlefields and places of interest (Antietam, Harpers Ferry, John Brown's Farm, etc.), C&O Canal, Fort Frederick (a stone fort active in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War), railroad museums. Recreation: the Appalachian Trail and other hiking trails,  canoeing/tubing/kayaking/fishing on the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, etc. Wineries and (micro)breweries are seemingly everywhere (not my thing). Best selling author Nora Roberts lives nearby and owns a bookstore in Boonsboro (along with several other properties there).

Best of all: some great riding roads!

We also have the most awesome Sheriff in the area.

Raleigh NC. IIRC the first city Sherman didn't burn. Also the Capital of the State and seat of Wake County. Well known for technology in the adjacent Research Triangle Park, home to seven universities, did I mention research? Back to the Recent Unpleasantness, the largest surrender of the Confederacy took place just up the road at Bennett Place.
There are as many stories about Raleigh as there are Raleighites tellin' stories!

Newton, KS is 10 miles south of my place. It was on the Chisholm Trail and a railhead for cattle for a year in 1871 with a hell raising reputation that made Dodge City and Tucson look like church camps.
In 1871 a gunfight in Hide Park (Supposably got that name from the girls "showing so much hide there") left eight dead. Remember that was with cap & ball pistols. The railroad stayed however and made Newton a viable town. Current Pop. is 19,000.

I grew up in Wallingford and now live in Meriden, CT - both in northern New Haven County

Once known for the high quality silver made here.  Meriden was the last small city in the US that the majority of it's residents worked in the city

Now it's known for steamed cheeseburgers!

Since 1885, my homestead of Terrell, Texas has been notorious as the site of the North Texas Lunatic Asylum.

But before you draw adverse inferences against me, let me point out that I have filed the necessary paperwork declaring my nearby compound to be a sovereign nation, known to my friends as the Republic of Prescott.

My Republic studiously maintains cordial relations with the Great State of Texas, but we have no truck with the lunatics.

Unless they ride Guzzis.  In which case, come camp within my borders.

California:  The Golden State, ( now with some tarnish ), damn nice weather.  Great grand dad moved to the sleepy little town of Los Angeles after the Civil War.
Dad came down from the PNW, for the weather, and a job at one of the "airplane plants" before WW2.

Fillmore:  Citrus capitol of the world.  ( well, used to be, now it's row crops and avocados )
Named after a railroad official who made the town a stop,  not the former President.
Town was devastated by the Northridge  earthquake in 1994.
              Rebuilt.
              Nice place to live.

Bungendore's not famous for anything. The closest town of note is Queanbeyan which is an ancient aboriginal word meaning 'Place of the fat, unemployed, chain smoking single mother'. Just beyond that is Canberra, the National Capital, famous for Pornography, Prostitution and Politicians! Three things that not only roll off the tongue but are also seemingly entwined in a sort of loathsome Gordian knot!

We are close to the Snowy Mountains, (Great riding roads.)  and the most unspoilt beaches on the east coast of Oz though so it's not all bad.

Sadly Edmonton is still know for "West Edmonton Mall' for a long time the largest indoor shopping mall in the world and Wayne Gretsky's hockey career with the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL, long past glories.
The Americans built a couple large air bases here and for a few weeks during WW2 the municipal airport laid claim to being the busiest air strip in the world as American and Canadian built fighters and bombers were using the strip as a jumping off point on to Alaska and over the pole aircraft ferry route to the Ruskies. Edmonton was also the marshalling point for construction material in the building of the Alaska Highway.

My family farm/home is 15 miles from my Master Sculptor's studio where I apprenticed in Barre Vermont- "The Granite Center of the World" and Rock of Age's quarry that is considered the largest granite quarry in the world.

My own studio here in Spartanburg SC is further away from Elberton Ga, "the Granite Capitol of the World" where I now do most of my business.  approx 1/3 of all USA made granite memorial products are produced in Elberton.

Here in Spartanburg- it used to be peaches. At one time, Spartanburg County produced more peaches than the entire state of GA.  More recently, it's about NASCAR and lifelong resident legends like driver David Pearson (still lives approx a mile from me) Owner/Builder Bud Moore, Cotton Owens plus others including Jack Smith, James Hylton and more.

Barrow Co., GA is famous for the Ten Commandments mounted on a wall inside the old courthouse(supposed to be not permitted). They got around the law by renting that wall to someone else. When my wife and I got married I got a pic of us next to the Commandments.

Lindale, Texas is the home for country music star Miranda Lambert and her gift store. There used to be a big cannery in town when this area was covered with blackberries and blueberries. Almost all gone as no one wants to work to pick them. Sad.

Are you familiar with progressive country singer Kacey Musgrave? She grew up in Golden which appears to not be much north of Lindale.

An interesting thread indeed!

We too have a large population of Amish. Plaques tout it as being the fourth largest Amish settlement in the world. A nearby county in the Northeast corner of the state has the greatest number of covered bridges of any county in Ohio. One of the most recent is over 600 feet long and is the longest multi span bridge in Ohio.

Cleveland has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The phrase Rock and Roll was coined here by Alan Freed who is buried here. Cleveland is also home to the USS Cod, a WW2 Gato class sub. Three of the four engines have been restored to running condition and were built by GM in their Cleveland diesel plant. The Cod is known for performing the only international sub to sub rescue when they rescued the Dutch off a reef when their sub, (the O 19), ran aground on the reef in early July of 1945. It  is the only U.S. submarine that has not had stairways and doors cut into her pressure hull for public access. It is still afloat and moored here. Nearby is the William C Mather, a 600 foot ore boat built in 1925. It is accessible for touring and is part of the Great Lakes Science Center, which is also worth seeing. All these are located within walking distance of one another.

There is a good wine industry near the lake in NE Ohio due to the tempered climate that is good for grape production. Various wineries abound, if that's your thing.

Then there is the Cleveland Orchestra, considered to be one of the five best in America, and known around the world. Their Christmas show this year will feature Jamie Farr, a Toledo Ohio native and star of the TV show MASH. He will narrate "The Night Before Christmas" for the Cleveland Orchestra's Christmas show.

Glen Ellyn, Illinois - that is a bit of a puzzler...
Laurie Anderson, performance artist and Lou Reed's final wife, was born here.
Also the birthplace of Marcellus Jones, who might have fired the first shot at the battle of Gettysburg.
But probably best known for being only about 10 miles from a Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, BMW, Triumph and Enfield dealer and only about 5 miles from a Triumph, Ducati, KTM and MV Agusta dealer.

As for me, I hail from the heart of the NY Finger Lakes. We happen to be the #2 wine region in the entire US of A... slightly behind some valley in California that got named after an auto parts store.

Lotsa stuff up here. You want history, how about the Erie Canal? It's what made NYC from a small seaport into the monster it is today. Got some of the best fishing in the country, hunting too. We have Corning Glass just down the road, the museum there never ceases to amaze me. It's where they made the 200 inch mirror for the Palomar observatory... designed in 1928, finally finished in 1948. They have one of the cracked mirror blanks on display... as well as glass going back 5000 years ago. Good stuff, makes you think about how long humans have been smart enough to make glass.

Throw in Watkins Glen racetrack being nearby, and yeah, loads of good things where I live.

Sadly, being a world of balance, the good parts have their opposing bad parts... mostly in the forms of taxes, laws, regulations, etc... Seems a person can't even fart in NY State without permission.

New Zealand.  Most people remark on the number of sheep we have , used to be 40 million but now down to just below 30mill I believe.

Where I live, Christchurch.  Used to be called "The Garden City" with lots of trees etc.  Then we had an earthquake.......  We still have plenty of trees etc. but now we also (still) have swathes of cleared open spaces.  People have been planting them with community gardens, help yourself fruit trees and are great places to let your dog run free.  The displaced population had a migration to more outlying areas where the ground is more stable.

I love it up there!  Trumansburg, Ithaca, etc.  Some of the best Hard Cider this side of the Atlantic.  And more small breweries every day.  The one thing NYS did was make it easier for a small winery, brewery, cidery, distillery to go into business.  I think there's a fair amount of small dirt tracks nearby as well.  PARTY at RICKS!

Oslo, Norway: I think it’s best known for its viking ship museum; the original painting «Scream» in the Munch museum; the Gustav Vigeland sculpture park;  the Holmenkollen ski jump.

My recommendations would certainly include the viking ship museum which is one of my favourites. Gustav Vigeland’s younger brother Emanuel made a mausoleum which is a much overlooked gem  -  it’s mainly a fresco-covered, unilluminated vault with dramatic scenes of human life from conception to death (while Gustav’s sculptures, in light granite in open air, convey human life from birth to death). I’d include a visit to the Oscarsborg fort in the fjord about one hour away  -  beautiful in itself and with an interesting and dramatic history.

Among the things that make life enjoyable here are the proximity to the forest offering hiking, bicycling, canoing and skiing (would you believe 1,000 miles of XC trails) opportunities and a good and diverse music scene.

Presently no Guzzi dealers in town; mine is one hour+ away. And I’d say you need to ride for a while to get to the good rides.

My wife has family in Enfield, so I've been there a few times, and I hate it! Crazy traffic all day long, but that's likely because it's halfway between Springfield MA and Hartford CT on the main road between those two cities.

I wandered down to buy tickets, saw the queue and decided to go to a friend's place nearby, to have a coffee while it diminished. When I came out, there was no line. I thought they'd sold out, and didn't bother to walk 50 yards to the Students Union building to find out. I later discovered they had a few left. At the time I wasn't bothered. I wasn't a big Who fan.
My other stupidity was hitching through New York State in the summer of 69, heading for Windsor, Ontario, and ignoring what some of those who gave me a lift were saying about a festival that was about to kick off.
The Leeds University Students Union was an amazing venue. My first weekend there, in 1967, they had the Jeff Beck Band, fronted by Rod the Mod. Over the years I saw The Stones, The Kinks (with Bill Haley as warm up), Fleetwood Mac, in their Peter Green days, Donovan, Leonard Cohen, Ritchie Havens, and many others. Zeppelin came, and Wings. I never bothered with either. I gave up going regularly in 1972, but nearly ten years later I went to see Southside Johnny. it was a journey back in time.

What did I miss?
Is “redneck” a politically charged term?......Hmm, yeah, guess you’re right.

Dude , rednecks come in all flavors , how does Foxworthy define one , something like *someone who revels in a complete lack of sophistication* . Sound familiar ?

This little town I'm in , Hager City, WI, is home to Island Fireworks, Purina pet food factory and Meyer Industries, now called something else, Warren Buffet bought it. they make large power transmission poles. They are the towers with the arms for the wires . Across the Mississippi River ( not known for anything ) is Redwing boot company. For motorcycling there's not much, it's filled with hills and corners some tarred roads that you need first gear on.

Marlborough, Mass.... A couple of New Brew Pubs that were supposed to open a while ago...

Made a pit stop in Haverhill a while back, seems to be bouncing back, too.

Nice beach where the occasional body washes up. Shark sightings, drowning tourists and gang violence. The Bee Gees lived down the road (I dont think thats a good thing though).

Well Chuck you know I’m from Indiana too so I guess I’m glad I became a Buckeye ;)

Southwest Ohio, or the Dayton/Cincinnati area....

Tremendous History that goes on and on....

The birthplace of aviation - home of the Wright Brothers and the fabulous Air Force Museum, a must see for all aviation fans.

The birthplace of the automotive starter (Charles Kettering). Other inventions from Dayton include the simple yet effective Standard Register receipt machine, NCR cash registers (an amazing display in the Dayton History facility at Carillon Park in Dayton).

One of TWO Packard museums but one not to be missed if you are a Packard fan and in the area.

Going South to Cincinnati - CHILI. At least our version of it, tinged with Cinammon and to anyone from the area - addictive. Perennial losing pro football and baseball teams in the Bengals and Reds ;) Countered by the impressive Cincinnati Symphony. And the Taft Theatre is a phenomenal music venue.

All of this in a nicely divergent economy that has provided a living for a whole bunch of people for a long time, both in Government and private sectors.

For riding - stay on the South Side of Dayton, and head SE OR SW for some great riding. N KY is very nice as well, and you only need to cross the bridge in Cincinnati then get off the beaten path - try mapping to Rabbit Hash KY.

Eats beside Cincinnati Chili - try North China in Centerville OH, or Taquiera Mixteca in Dayton for authentic Mexican. Or - Sunrise Cafe in Yellow Springs OH. and if you like pizza and microbrew pubs; we have them by the spades: https://www.dayton.com/places/restaurant/your-guide-the-best-dayton-area-pizza/1CcJ4ZkReQNuqyWTTDHYCK/ Wheat Penny is a fabulous place to eat in Dayton, but this list has some sterilng pizza places that my oldest son missed while living in Atlanta of all places. He seriously missed Dayton Food!

I'm realizing that maybe I just posted the ANTITHESIS to the original question and my apologies if I'm telling you little-known things about our region. But these are things we SHOULD be known for in case you get to this area.

Fremont, CA.  45 miles south of San Francisco on the east side of the Bay.
Was originally one of the trail of Spanish mission settlements before the Anglos stole it.
Now the fabricator of the TESLA automobile (about 3 miles from my house).
GUZZI CONTENT:  The Dumbarton Bridge western entry into Fremont was the filming location of the Guzzi Police Ambassador chase scene, drop crash, and moto theft found in "Harold and Maude".  I've escorted several Guzzi visitors to those exact spots.
Used to have a fantastic, national record drag strip, glider airport, etc.  Now just malls, houses, malls, houses, malls, houses, etc.

Thought Id put this up to show where the Bee gees lived in my area. This was one of the seed beds for Disco. Stayin Alive was obviously inspired by their time here. The commemorative plaque was stolen which is pretty typical and the house was demolished to build an ugly Mac Mansion. I love my area.

Chambersburg PA, I suppose.  There was also Lawrence KS, but you might consider it a "western town".

I live in Kirkliston, a village just outsaide Edinburgh

*was the site of the first parliament in Scotland in 1235

*King Edward 1 of England camped here overnight in 1298 before he beat the Scottish army under William Wallce at Falkirk.  during the stay a fight was broken up by English Cavalry between Welsh Archers and priests resulted in 80 archers and 18 priests dead, nice way to warm up for a battle  (English won quite convincingly using the English and Welsh longbowmen)

*local church orignally built by Knights Templar in 13th century and  the oldest stone in the graveyard is dated 1545. A curious gravestone features two carved heads wearing spectacles; its date of 1727 possible makes it the world's oldest depiction of glasses with sides.   -  hows that for an important landmark

*Rabbie Burns stayed in Castle House in the village during a tour of Scotland, scratching a few line sonto a window pane (now in museum in canada of all places)

* village was a dormitory for labourers bulding the Forth Bridge (railway) and had the nickname Cheesetown because of the large volumes of cheese sold to them to make their work sandwiches

*original home to Drambuie Whisky liquer and associated world champion Pipe Band

*2  miles to see the bridges at thr River Forth

*30 minutes ride to Edinburgh
