If you want to put your actual age in the comments section, I’ll tally them up when the poll is over and we’ll have an average, as well as a median.
I’ll start with 49.
-
Being at the bottom of one of those age groups, I resent being lumped in with the other 80% of geezers in that ten year span, just sayin'.

Your age making you over sensitive?

A midlife crisis got me into the MG brand, old (well, older) age got me into the cool Guzzis. I started with a new 2013 V7, bought a 1984 LMIII, then a '77 T3 and now a 1974 Eldo. Not sure if it's a sickness or a curse but it has been a fun ride.
-
Turned the big 70 last month.
When I am on the bike a lot of my age seems to drop away.
-
Just guessing, most of us are just a wee bit older this time.
-
I will be 66 in June.

I turn 56 this June. A life long friend got me into Guzzis when I was @25.

Too young to retire. Too old to keep track of my age or my birthday. Not too old to trade in the bikes for a Miata. :bike-037:

Dear
Whippersnapper Luap, I'm 61.
I got to my first national in Kansas in 1993 and was surprised to be one of the youngest at 35. (with the 'ole lady (36))

61, will be 62 in April. It ain't so much the years as it is the miles. I feel like I have been taken on a rocky trail, rode hard and put away wet.

I still feel twenty something, my license says 64, so in one more year I’ll be in the majority. Where’s the beer and when do I get paid?

Just turned 76 in January of this year. How did that happen? Feels funny when you're the youngest of three brothers by several years, and when you were one of the youngest in your senior class. But I'm liking it!
However, let me emphasize the best part of it ......I've been retired and still have a few bucks left in the bank since Jan 2005. Don't like the 76 part, but I have to consider that the period from age 62 to 76 has been damn good. Got in a lot of rides in that 14 year period. I wish that for the rest of you youngsters! :thumb:

What I found with other bikes I have owned that attract younger riders is that they are into all the other social media platforms and don't frequent forums as much as us older folks.

Well, the number is 85 this year. Wish it wasn't quite so large but that's just the way it is.
My last motorcycle is now living with a new owner -- nice young couple. They'll learn about the hobby while they enjoy it. I pray they have many safe miles on it.
My wife and I took our daughter and family out to eat last night to celebrate her 50th birthday. The G'daughter was there, just accepted into Purdue for next year, was given a large scholarship for being such an excellent student. What's not to like about that?
My wife and I expect to leave in a few days for a couple weeks seeing friends/relatives in the States more south of here. Will be getting away from the effects of the Polar Vortex they talk about. It's Winter -- this is what happens.
Got my "Traveling Calendar" pretty well set up for the coming year. I'm expecting to see many of you again and talk about the "good old times" and what we did when we were younger. I'll be in the red Vette, it's really not a bad ride.
Quite frankly, when I think about it, 85 is a pretty good number.
Ride safe out there.

Always wondered why I got more looks from older dudes than from girls when I ride, now I guess I know.
First and only bike so far is my 850T, started its restoration at 25. Never even heard of Guzzi until immediately prior to restoring it

68......when I stopped going to BMW rallies & started going to MG events my wife asked me if there was any difference. "The ladies in attendance were seemingly older & less attractive." @ the Guzzi events.
Uh-oh, just my observation/opinion.

Some of you know that my first bike when I was 16 was a 1951 74HP Harley. My dad didn't think I'd make it to legally drink beer or vote. (21). The old saying, "how old would you be if you didn't know how old you are."

Large representation in the 55-75 range. An example of the Baby Boomers continued influence on consumer goods.
The big concern is what happens when those who are 55 today become 80+ and no longer ride motorcyles, spend money on hotrods and classic cars, buy RVs, houses, etc.
Things will be different in another 25 years.

Well thank you sir.
I will say this about that:
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I... Have become comfortably numb

As I'm fond of saying, age distribution is not a "quantum" thing - it's a continuum of ages. "Greatest Generation", "Baby Boomers", "Millenials", etc is just a way of sort of characterizing people - there's nothing definitive about it.
When we in our 50s and 60s are 80+ and thus fewer of us riding, the people who are now 25 and 30 will have made some money, got interested in old bikes and cars, will have bought and paid for their house, and will be buying up everything we've got at estate sales and such, and be right where we are today.
At the Potomac Vintage Riders show and swap meet where I spent a lovely day Sunday, of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of people there throughout the day, it was about evenly distributed between little kids running about sitting on the Honda QA-50s, young 20 and 30 somethings looking for parts to get an Ossa or Bultaco or Elsinore running, and dudes that looked a lot like me with gray beards.
We won't be the last ....

I think it's fairly obvious that everyone here is a bit older. 1: because of the wealth of knowledge and 2: they a capable of constructing a sentence and use punctuation.

Well, we're still maintaining a solid average age of 60 of those that replied with their ages. This tells me that:
A: People don't start wising up to which motorcycle to ride until late.
B: Piaggio had better take notice and adjust accordingly. Maybe the V85 that the older folks hate will be loved by youth.
C: We need more dealers. Younger folks can't wrench for the most part. So, they will never buy a bike that the closest dealer is 100+ miles away.
D: None of the above matter, nor will change. Guzzi riders are going to ride Guzzi's no matter what.

I think we'll need a parallel survey then, since it appears that most folks actually start riding Guzzis when young and ride them for 30 or 40 years, so perhaps the average age of 60 has been riding Guzzis since their 30's!? There appears to be more brand loyalty to Guzzis than to brands of cars!
At any rate, my takeaway is that these are good survey results, as it appears that motorcycling keeps you young at heart, adventurous and still actively engaged in life, look how many folks above 65 are riding and enjoying it. Let's hope that for the youngsters in their 30/40's they carry on the Guzzi tradition.
-
That probably holds true for HD and the Japanese machines as well and maybe what you start on is what you stay with.
Guzzi is almost( I have found since starting to ride one) unknown to the general population. (States)
No good cure for that?
It's a good illness to have - Severe Guzzi Itis! I know I have wandered from Yamaha to BMW to Guzzi over the last 30 years, but been monogamous Guzzi for the last 10 years. Perhaps in the future a GoldWing might appear, but not for a while!

More important just to have a motorcycle, rather than the brand...whatever is most appealing, right?
LIke cycling...Cannondal e, Bianchi, Pinarello, Motobecane, Specialized...all great brands, everyone has a preference!
Just need to have the freedom to ride...that's the most important!
-
The cost of owning a European brand may have a lot to do with age of ownership, I know at 26 a Guzzi used up a disproportionately large piece of my income. I've owned many other brands both before and after as well, sometimes budget driven

Well done young fella. :thumb: Enjoy. You are probably aware by now that they are slightly different from run of the mill machines. Addictive though.
Your age will have brought the median age down somewhat.
-
53 here.. You know. I bet if you polled owners of most of the other brands you will find the same results. At least for the older school brands... HD, BMW, etc... Price has a lot to do with it also. A young rider can shuffle down to the local HYK dealer and get some cheap entry level bikes all day long..But some brands just have a higher cost of admission, and will therefor speak mostly to the older more established people..
That being said I see/hear a lot of younger riders are really liking the V7 models. The trend/fad of more simple, classic bikes is here, and MG finally fits into the market. And really the price wile not entry level, is pretty fair for the market.. I think they could sell a ton of them if the marketing/dealer network was there...
-
65 coming in sept. almost dead
-
At this point in time, I had a fairly good job, and could keep myself in K bikes under warranty. Trade in value wasn't bad, and my job kept me busy enough that I didn't want to do the routine maintenance, and left it to the dealer. I had good luck with the K's, and enjoyed riding them. I suspect had I owned a Guzzi, the same may have been true, with a decent dealer.
Anyway, here I am, nearly 28 years ago, on the BRP. I'd ridden from Ann Arbor MI. I made this ride at least 3 times a summer when I lived in Michigan. Think back 28 years, and report on what you were riding then, and your age. I was 48 in this pic.

Why is this happening again? Couldn’t we just add a year in our heads?
As my Dad would say "Put some more nails in my coffin today"

Ride safe out there guys and gals.

That's some obscure stuff, right there. Canadian singer/songwriter. I like that "Four Strong Winds" song.
Ian Tyson.
Wow well done Sir...and nice touch with Four strong winds....literally written the day after "Blowin in the Wind" in response to Dylan and while hanging with him
Ian Tyson...amazing...a nd not many folks know about him!

Did I already contribute? At 85 my memory is down to whatever is in hand.
Still riding sport bikes, plus a V7 III, at every chance. Won't stop 'til I drop.
Spoiling demographics as I go. Good fortune, R3~

Skewing the age average higher is NOT a spoiler! :thumb:
It's a good thing. Wisdom, experience, knowledge to share, like high-fiber recipes and other things that young folks don't even know they need yet ....

Thank you Lannis. You're very kind.
Had a good friend in Manakin Sabot. . . another in Irvington.
Sometimes wonder if a favorite restaurant 'Silver Thatch', in Charlottesville, remains. R3~

I don't think it's kindness as much as it is "I'm Getting Old Too!" Beats the alternative, though. Hope I'm still riding 20 years from now!
I know Manakin Sabot there on VA 6 pretty well; my son has the tree-service contract for the original Sabot plantation. The Silver Thatch closed last year and was auctioned ... I don't know if it was broken up for parts or if the new owners will run it as a going business .... Charlottesville has gone from being a sort of quaint trendy college town to a big sprawling commercial area spreading up US29 10 miles to Ruckersville with no breaks ...

Happy birthday, Charlie! I checked out your web site, hoping to see your '77 Morini Strada; do you still have it?
I owned a '75 3 1/2 Sport back in 1977, and still have a soft spot for those bikes...

Feel funny now...have about 15-20 good years left if I am lucky...Hope I can still ride at age 80+..No looking back however...and no regrets..."ONWARD THROUGH THE FOG IS MY MOTTO..." I'll be 72 in Feb. I haven't ridden since say 2012 due to unknown illness(es?). I keep the bike running and have done some work on it. At one time I couldn't even work on it.
This August I saw a new doc and she found a number to issues that she is now treating me for.
I haven't felt this good in years and I have only been on treatment about 2 months. She said I would not "feel good" until next March.
I am not ready for prime time but I continue to progress and if this continues at the same rate I am now improving I just might be back on the Mille sometime next spring or summer. But I am not going to believe it till it happens. I have been through too many tests and treatments that haven't worked. But this is by far the best I have felt in a long long time. So I plan on riding again at this ripe age of 72 if I am lucky. I'll have to do some careful relearning for sure. I still have a lot of strength to regain. Fingers crossed.
BTW my first car was a 62 Studebaker Lark. Bought it for $40 in 1972. Never got it running as winter in central Illinois without a garage is a bitch. So I found a running Ford Falcon. I always wanted a Studebaker Hawk.
-
I always wanted a Studebaker Hawk.
That was my first car.. bought with farm labor at 15.

I thought I'd responded to this back when it first appeared, but I went thru all the responses & didn't see one from me. Did you pick up my age from my profile? Anyway, I turned 73 last April 4th. Trying hard to prevent my mind writing checks my creaking, popping, aching body can't cash.
Speaking of average ages, we had 15 at our monthly Virginia Guzzi Riders lunch Saturday....on a bitter cold day. 4 bikes, a V11 Sport, an SP, a Nevada, & a Triumph. With younger generation Nate & Keri Jones and baby Summer (2 1/2) in attendance we had a CONSIDERABLY younger average age than usual. It was great.

When I started my stone sculpture apprenticeship, my "official" job description was Studebaker mechanic as we danced around Union politics. Gary had just started restoring this 55 Speedster. What a gorgeous machine. Finished it and started on a 57 Golden Hawk before I was laid off in 03. Both cars came out great and showed well. Hemming did multiple articles, including this one on the 55. https://www.hemmings.com/blog/article/chrome-improvement/. The 57 has been sold, but he still has the 55 and I still wear a Studebaker patch on my stone apron.

I am also a Studebaker lover. i had a '50 and a '59 pickup. i wrecked the '59 and swapped the engine and drivetrain into the '50. far better trucks than anything from the big 3. The 259 V8 was a very depenable and durable engine.

67. In complete denial. :thumb: Honestly, I am so impressed with the collective wisdom of the contributors and willingness to share and teach on this forum. As an example, just look at the recent threads of older stereo equipment and history of Ford & Ferrari. Excellent! Inspirational that so many are still actively engaged with the sport and still riding. As an "older" rider said to me many years ago, "Ya gotta have another reason to get up in the morning except to pee."
If you can stay mentally engaged you drag the physical along with it.

About like a 55 Chevy. There is only so much you can do with log wagon technology. It was sturdy and reliable, though..

56. Hard to imagine I am bringing down the average. Never owned a Studebaker. First car was a 71 Toyota Corolla I paid $350 for. Did some body work (poorly), paid a friend $50 to paint it, sold it for $750. That led me into the auto business.

Too young to retire. Too old to keep track of my age or my birthday. Not too old to trade in the bikes for a Miata. :bike-037:
Also 77 in Northwest Arkansas and not too old to trade in a Miata for my 96 Guzzi.

Well I was going to ignore this, who cares how old I am, but then I just turned 74, so I guess that's better than not getting old!
