As a Native Long Islander, this makes me sad. FOr the loss to the community, but also for Billy Joel's health.
I attended SUNY Farmingdale in 77-78. Billy Joel was just starting to become superstar. I heard songs from his then current smash album (The Stranger, IIRC) at least 10 times a day. Locals were thrilled to see a homie make the big time.
Interesting, I was friends with Liberty Devito when I lived in Northport in the late 90's. We met at the Golds Gym. I used to See Billy all around, usually at the Hardware Store out in Cutchogue. I was in JR High in 77 (8th grade), and our Music Teacher was friends with someone in the band. I'll never forget the day he played "The Stranger" to our Class. Was the first Joel song I've every heard, and have been a fan ever since.
