Michelin Macadam wet road performance?
« on: March 01, 2015, 01:06:05 PM »
Are Macadams slippery in the wet?

I've had the rear tire break loose twice accelerating out of corners.  It's a V50 Monza - so not exactly tire shredding power.  Both on wet roads during mist-light rain.  The first was accelerating out of an tight corner in 2nd gear.  The second accelerating in 2nd or 3rd on a winding road.  In both cases it felt very controllable and not a big deal - there was a little over steer, but reducing throttle brought it back in line with no drama.

Wondering if I've just hit oil patches or the tire is the problem.

I've been happy with the tires in every other respect and they have lots of tread left.

Thanks for the info Dusty.

So by "cruiser bike tire" do you mean that cruisers never get ridden in the rain or never go around corners?  ;D

Michelin has replaced the Macadam with the Pilot Active at least 6-7 years ago. Before, the Macadam was a typical „wooden“ tire for riders who payed most attention to economical aspects.

See the two slides as warning and get new tires. If the tread is still OK, flog it on Ebay, they will be sold

In the sticky / hard tread balance, those tires are biased toward durability.  Harder tread means less sticky, especially in wet or slippery conditions.  Try to be smoother with the throttle in low grip situations; change to a stickier tire if you're still not satisfied.

Macadam was a radial tire; Pilot Activ is a bias-ply tire, so the latter did not replace the former.  Macadam is an older tire, though.
CORRECTION:  Macadam 50/50E was a bias-ply tire; Macadam 100 was a radial tire.  Both are obsolete.

If you want a Michelin radial tire with better grip in all conditions, with decent tread life, get the Pilot Road 4 tires

EDIT:  I think that with a Monza V50, you want a bias-ply tire to match the chassis.  I recommend the Michelin Pilot Activ.

Avon Roadrider might work for you. They stick well on the Mille and last a long time.

Thanks Red,
Agreed.  I've got Roadriders on the Lemans and on both Ariels and have been happy with them - but the Ariels don't put down quite as much power as the Monza, and I seem to ride the Monza with a bit more confidence (cough  ;D) than the LeMans.

How old is the tire?

On the used GS I just picked up, I'm getting a bit of sliding around on the 6 year old rear tire that is barely worn.  It is better running lower air pressure than normal (dropping about 4 PSI).
