Impact damage on piston skirt

Hello everyone, Capt.LLoyd from Victoria B.C. here.  I'm the happy owner of a 72' Eldo currently being dismantled on the way to restoration.  My curiousity is this:  studying the right hand side piston the other night I see an impact ding along with a small and short crack on the upper skirt bottom.  Is this something that anyone has seen before?  I hesitate to guess what might have caused it...any ideas?  Also, would the concensus be that the piston is junk?  The 'ding' is from the outside surface facing inward, the wear pattern on the surrounding skirt shows no high spots.  Dimension of ding: perhaps 1/4" in length,  1/16" depth.  It's running vertically from the skirt bottom towards the crown.  I'm looking forward to your thoughts everybody, thanks.  I'll post some snaps tomorrow...

I've seen this type of damage come from an engine being turned  with the jug off and the piston unsupported catches on the block . Means the piston has reached the end of its service life.

possibly dropped by PO when dismantled on another tear down?

If I'm understanding correctly what's being described, I think I saw this once caused by a ring failure. Is there a chip in one of the rings?

I think it's time to price out new cylinders and pistons...unless someone here has a functional set sitting on a shelf

If you have the original cylinders with chrome plated bores, then it is definitely time to source replacement cylinder kits.

There is no such thing as a 'Functional Set' of forty plus year old chrome plated bores. Their failure is not a case of *If*, it's a case of *When* and the *When* is generally sooner rather than later.
