Swapping Breva wheels on to a 2012 V7c (problems)
« on: September 15, 2016, 08:15:37 PM »
I bought a set of 2004 Breva 750 wheels to swap in to my 2012 V7C. My understanding was that, other than probably need to fab a new spacer or two, it was going to be a pretty direct swap. However, once I got the rear wheel off and compared it to my "new" rim, the left hand (non-drive) side of the rim seems to be significantly different from the old one. The brake rotor mounts are farther apart and are a different size bolt, so my existing rotor can't be fitted. Also, the rubber cush bits on that side don't fit in the new wheel. I've read several threads on here about how to do this, and no one else seems to have had this problem (or at least I've missed where they talked about it). On the new wheel, the rotor mounts stick out farther than the hub, whereas the old on the hub sticks out probably an inch or so farther than the rotor mounting holes.

Can anyone shed some light on what I'm missing, please?

Thanks!

Could it be the others that did the conversion used the Breva rotor?  Same w/the rubbers?

It's certainly possible, but none mentioned it (well, I did see one that mentioned the rotor, but none that mentioned the rubbers).

I'm particularly concerned about the fitment of the old caliper with a different rotor. It may be that the Breva rotor is the same size, just a different mount or something like that, but I'm not sure.

You mean a Breva rotor mounted on a Breva wheel ends up in the same place as the original. I remember the threads of some doing the conversion but didn't follow it to see what was done.

Yes, I'm concerned if my V7C rotor, and it's stock mount will fit a breva rotor on a breva wheel.

Maybe you should rephrase that

I understand. If the members here that did the conversions are still on the forum you can send them a PM or give a shout out to them here on this thread.  I'm pretty sure they would tell you.
I went through the same thing putting Centauro mags on a California Aluminum.

I did a swap with v11 sport wheels on a late model California. Had to use the entire wheel with drive pieces. Brake caliper bracket required custom spacing.

to fit Breva wheels to my 2012 V7R I have to remove two small shim washers on the front caliper to get things to line up. On the rear I had to take about 1/4" off the inner spacer and add it to the outside. Basically more the wheel to the right. You can also buy specific Breve spacers and axles for less than $100 to make it plug and play.

So, did you use the rotor off the Breva on both wheels?

Ha! I just had the opposite problem as you...2014 Stone cast wheels on a 2009 V7C that was already converted to Breva wheels: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=85881.0

Here's what you'll need (pre 2012 parts):
rotor
caliper
caliper mount
speed sensor
All proper mounting bolts for these parts
A speed bleeder is also helpful for bleeding the brakes. M8x125

My cush drive rubbers did transfer over to the Stone wheel. Maybe they are different, or maybe I did something right OR wrong to get them to fit.

I also used the original axle and spacer from my Classic for the Stone wheel. The Breva wheel axle and spacer is different than the classic (the thicker part of the axle that also serves as a "stop" for the caliper carrier is a little longer, and so is the spacer.

You'll also have a large gap between the front wheel and fender due to the 17" wheel. I can write up what I did for that issue later.

I'd suggest trying your bike with just the Breva front wheel and making sure you like it. Steering is quicker, but you loose some stability at higher speeds.

Hope this helps.

Is that all for the rear wheel? Does the front caliper/rotor fit as-is?

That should be everything for the rear wheel. A search on Harper's website shows the axel and cush drive rubbers being the same between the Classic and the Stone.

As far as the front goes, as long as you have the Marzocchi forks, the front wheels, rotor, caliper will bolt right up. If you have the Kaifa fork (I believe they started using them on the V7 mk II variants) then you will probably need all of the above parts.

I wish I could use the existing rear caliper and mount plate with the Breva disc... I wonder if it's just a matter of fabbing up the mount plate?

That mount plate needs to be exact so that the rear wheel lines up as well as your caliper and the speed sensor. The Breva 750 plate on eBay may work just fine. http://www.ebay.com/itm/03-08-MOTO-GUZZI-BREVA-750-Brake-Caliper-Mount-Bracket-/181914925864?hash=item2a5af97b28:g:ULcAAOSw5VFWL6-~&vxp=mtr

If you're patient, you can find all of the used parts on eBay.

I just ordered a plate and caliper off eBay, and the rest of the bits from Harper's. Wherever! Thank for all the info and advice, everyone. I hope this works!

Just curious why you're converting to the Breva wheels? I just went from the Breva to the Stone wheels.

Well, the breva wheels were cheap, and I "thought" it was a direct swap.

I had the same thing! The Stone wheels were cheap, and I thought it was a direct swap as well.
