Out side of Visor misting up
« on: November 01, 2016, 02:45:50 AM »
Morning all

I came to work on the bike today as the car is poorly

So its early dawn, cars have their lights on, its overcast, road is moist, mist/fog abounds and the tractors have been out and about dropping mud on the road - not the best motorcycling conditions.

The problem I had was the pinlock visor was perfect .... on the inside but I was forever wiping the outside as the moisture kept sticking to it.

What propriety or redneck (I believe that is a proper Americanism) products do you recommend to resolve this

Cheers

Pledge.  But it doesn't really help with fog...wipe, wipe, wipe.

Rain X is great stuff, but there are some plastics you are not suppose to use it on. I have no idea if the helmet visor is one of them or not. Just verify before using.

beyond that, I have just used Plexus of something similar, like car wax. Seems to do OK. On the inside, I use these anti fog cloths that I get from my dealer. They are reusable and keep the inside clear. They come in a little pouch that fits easily in my jacket pocket.

Running into heavy fog, you may just have to deal with it, just like in your car.

Son of a gun. I had no idea they made a formula for plastic. Thanks Charlie.

I remember when Rain X first hit the market. It was an infomercial type of product than many though was snake oil. Turned out to be great stuff.

Car wax isn't bad on visors.  I love Rain-X on car windshields, so I may try some of the OK for plastic version on my visors.

Some visors have coatings that react with the Rain-X and cloud up the surface (Scorpian helmets come to mind). I've not used the version for plastics, but plan to give it a try (Thanks, Charlie).

As an FYI, Honda changed their formula a few years ago now. The new isn't quite as good as the old.

You can still buy the original formula, but its called the "Origina  bike spirits spray cleaner and polish".

Shaving cream works on glass for fog.  No idea about plastic.

It's a great cleaner for when you travel, also. Since it is aerosol, it doesn't leak in your saddlebag (as long as you replace the cap). It's also a good emergency bead lube in the event you have to remove/install a tire.

You're welcome.

IIRC in the 'old' days the original Rain-X was made for airplane windshields (which were plexi)...at least that's where I got my first bottle of it, from the recommendation of a pilot.  Over the years things changed and now they have several products.

FWIW, I'd still test it on your visor to make sure you don't have a coating that is incompatible.

I think rain x is just wax in an alcohol base. Polishing my visor with Carnuba Wax seems to work just as well as anything else. But mist is the worst, just like fog. The droplets aren't large enough to overcome the surface tension so hang in there.

Todays ride in (car still poorly) was totally different. Bright and sparkling and the bikes dash showing a * and 3 deg C - which brings a whole new set of concerns!!!

Thanks for all the guidance everyone

Rain X appears to be favourite and I see that there's a product called "Raincoat" that appears similar. I'll check them both out when I go to the bike show at the NEC in a week or so

Here's a thumb wiper.

http://www.aerostich.com/adjustable-visor-wipe.html

My Aerostich Roper gloves have a built-in wiper on the left thumb, works well for this mist problem, like I had 2 days ago.
