Probably helped by the departure of Gilera and Moto Guzzi from GP racing in 1957, and by his own early departure from motorcycle racing to drive Formula 1.

If only the the bike world evolved as quickly as the Formula One world back then, maybe a LOT of talented riders, mechanics, and team managers would have stayed on in the two-wheeled world...MotoGP has nothing to answer for, but racing automobiles have risen to the top of the 'natural progression' ladder for talented riders/drivers even though the caliber of racing is very comparable, IMHO...I prefer it, actually...

 There is brilliant interview with Surtees somewhere . In the 80's and 90's whenever Mercedes would trot out their priceless GP cars from the 30's and 40's for exhibitions at large events , the driver was always Surtees . Often times he would drive/ride several vehicles in one day . A journalist from that era stated that all of the other car and bike racers from history were simply parading at events like the one at Assen Park, Surtees was riding/driving in anger . His off track persona is that of a classic self deprecating English gentleman , on the track he was a ferocious competitor .

 His collection is amazing , so it would not surprise me . He has a real Kompressor twin BMW that I've seen some video of him riding , He was not hanging about .
