Is my 04 raTi ready to blow up?
« on: May 18, 2017, 07:29:30 PM »
Did a few things ratting it up, 10 gallon tank from my T3, standard handlebars, floor boards from a T with the frame rails, EV fenders, Givi bags, all ready for work travel. Test rides and today I notice a weird light banging noise between 2450 and 2500 rpm. Maybe cam chain, maybe the hydraulic lifters, maybe clutch. Try every rpm and it's the same, no matter the gear but rattles at 2450 and 2500 rpm. Figured it out and will tell you later!

If you changed something and now a new thing is happening ....

.... It's something you changed, guaranteed ....

The winner!!! Exactly right! Motor must have a weirdness at 2475 rpm and yes, I watched the sidestand shake like a mother! . Because of the floor board rail change, the sidestand rode up to the header.
I saved thousands having it such a simple thing!

Had the same thing on my EV.  Must be a thing with that engine.  A little re-aligment of the header and all was well.

Well, you sort of KNEW that the chances of a cam chain going bad at the same time you'd gone in and changed a floorboard rail were pretty darn slim ....

Backl when we had the 2000 Bassa I thought one side of the engine had a small end bushing going bad or actually already gone....  the rapping noise was right at a certain Rpm.

When I got her into the garage for inspection I found the front engine bolt had a slightly loosened and the washer on the side with the nut was causing the sound... fhew...!

A simple piece of steel with a small piece of velcro on the bracket to prevent any noise. The tab that helps you retract the kickstand was the culprit.

I was down in Louisiana when I first heard a noise like that. Rode it 1100 miles on pins and needles until I found it once I was home.  Duh.
