Stelvio display says enter code

I did a search but did not find this....
Question: Randomly when I turn on the key a message comes up and says "Enter Code" Usually if I turn the key off and right back on everything boots as normal and bike starts no issues.  It just scares me when I see this.  I have a code set but have not tried entering it at that time to see what happens I will next time if I'm home it makes me nervous when this happens a couple of thousand miles from home. 
Any ideas why it would happen randomly?

The secure key, or the antenna to read the key code, is likely failing.
I would clean the antenna connectors with deoxit or such first.

The antenna is typically a collar around the key barrel, with a small lead to a nearby connector.

That happened to me when I used the spare key.  It apparently isn't equipped with the chip and fancy MG logo.

The positive in this is that Moto Guzzi was smart enough to program in an over ride (entering code) if the immobilizer system fails. On my BMW, if the immobilizer fails you're stuck and will have to haul the bike to a dealer (bringing a big wad of cash).

The spare key DOES have a chip, just not the decorative plate. If you bought your bike second hand, it's possible your spare was replaced at some point and the new one not properly programmed.
