Oil leak at cylinder head
« on: May 06, 2018, 03:46:11 PM »
Hi,
Oil leak on the right cylinder of my  1983 Le Mans. The oil is on the fin directly under the head gasket, and I can see oil at the gasket.See photo. I also have oil in the head nut recess under the spark plug, see photo. I removed the tank to check the oil supply line connection. Slight evidence of oil, nothing obvious, see photo. I changed the rubber o ring under the plug to the head nut last year while doing a valve clearance check.
Suggestions or comments appreciated.

Struggling with photos from photo bucket. What a pain.

So, you are actually (cough cough) paying Photoblockit?? A frugal Guzzi guy? $400 bucks a year?? They can kiss my patootie.
But I digress.
Have you torqued the heads?

I ditched PhotoBucket and went to PostImage.org.  YMMV.

Do the inspection plug o-ring once again.  Maybe add some sealant to the o-ring.

Could be the 4 o-rings under the rocker frame.  If you do those you will likely need to do a new head gasket as well since you will release all the sealing pressure.  Going that far, you might as well pull the cylinder and do the gasket and two o-rings under that.

Heads were torqued last year.
I did think it may be the o rings under the rocker frame.
Oh, and I did put some sealant on the o ring for the inspection plug that accesses the one head nut.

Were the heads off and that is why you torqued them?

I believe that they should be torqued twice after the heads are off, a second check after 500 miles or the like.

When I rebuilt the LM 1000 engine, I was surprised how much the gasket settling had allowed the nuts to loosen with running.

If it's not so bad why bother, but even if it is, taking the head off only takes a few hours (and I work at glacial speed).

Personally my worries about head removal are exhaust studs, I find they are prone to snapping so lots of antisieze and the inner head nut and cover on the opposite side from the plug that is a bear to remove every time.

I would check the compression fitting at the head for oil line. All those orings are 35yrs old now.

Old Jock.
I checked the head torques last year. They were OK. The head has not been removed. Exhaust manifold nuts were loose when doing the torque check.

guzzisteve. I put new oil lines on about 5 years ago. Did not see any real evidence of a leak at the compression joint. If it was leaking there, I do not see how it could make its way to the fins either side of the head gasket I will check anyway
