Solder or Crimp, that is the question
« on: September 17, 2018, 08:48:29 PM »
I have seen lots of opinions about wire connections, personally I crimp.  Here's a video that seems to make sense and may be useful:

Yep, crimp only just like the motorcycle and automobile manufacturers did at the factory. I use the original type connections and use a proper crimp tool.

posi locks look interesting but look like they are large in size for a lot of tight spots with multiple connectors on bikes.  I've always used the insulated marine grade crimp connectors that have the adhesive shrink covers.  The kit I have now is by Total Boat and is a great assortment for under 50 bucks. Any decent marine store should have these. Here  a place called Hamilton Marine,  Portland Maine

I always carry a few PosiLocks and some wire on the bike for roadside repairs. But I would not trust them as a permanent connection. They press the wires against the metal post with a plastic nut. Over time and heat cycles that plastic will get loose and the connection will get bad.

IF (capitalized because it’s a big “if”) I cut into my bike’s harness, I treat it like a point-to-point wired amplifier: soldered and encapsulated in shrink-tube.

He believes in solder. I use crimp as well, it's interesting to note that you can't use crimpers without the automatic tensioner on certificated aircraft.
