Hi all,

Feeling a little stupid - laid the rear drive on the bench wheel side down & she’s leaked. It hasn’t dropped a heap of oil but enough. Never had that happen before,

My question is which seal is most likely the culprit - wasn’t leaking on the bike so I’m hoping it’s the outer seal...

Thought I’d post here as you blokes have seen it all, anyone out there wish to make an educated guess?

Cheers,

Mike

Which bike? There are a lot your sig line. The only one you'd need to worry about is the V11. Allthe others breathe through their pinion bearings and if you leave them on their side they'll leak.

Thanks Pete,

Now I’m feeling more stupid - my rough as guts LM2

Appreciate the guidance, when I get her together I’ll do fresh fluids and monitor.

Can’t understate how helpful your comment is.

Pete,

I have the rear end out of my Cali 1100i (1998) - still. I was cleaning it up the other day and some oil leaked out of the gearbox end.

Does that indicate the seal needs replacing ??

Thanks

Kevin

Hoping he’ll say it’s the same rear drive as it’s not a spine frame

Otherwise I ain’t been listening properly...

Mike, sorry I thought your oil was leaking down at the inside - wheel end?

Mine is running out the tube - gearbox end.

Yes Kev!

Pete straightened me out - laying it flat oil dribbled out the front & went in various directions. When I thought about it I’ve never normally put the drive on the bench like that before (but it’s been 5 or so years since I did it swapping a uni).

Regardless good luck! (I often assume what I shouldn’t, makes me a bit of a mouth breather at times)

The rear drive is not sealed on the ones with the enclosed driveshaft, Cal series so it's completely normal for the oil to run out the driveshaft end. It's just going past a pair of tapered roller bearings that the pinion rides in.
