Carburation question.
« on: August 14, 2019, 04:52:04 PM »
As a general rule will fitting pod filters in place of the difficult to get at, original filters on the likes of a V50 or T3 necessitate any change in jetting? I ask because my daughter's V50 with pods seems to use gas faster than I remember with the original system and smells of fuel in the exhaust.

Could be the  rubber seat inserts on the choke plungers.  You can try flipping them over .

I'm not familiar with the bike or carbs, but it sounds to me like your float needle(s) isn't/aren't seating properly and cutting off the fuel delivery into the carbs, wag.

If the carbs are older and have never been rebuilt, new float needles & carb kits would probably be worth doing fwiw

Edit re the pod filters, I think 5-10% richer jetting is usually called for,,, but with the increased gas usage and fuel smell, doesn't sound like that's the issue imo.

     Good luck

In situations like this, I'm a firm believer the efficacy of a dyno run. When I had the Carberry Enfield V Twin built, the only one with the Electra top ends, a stab was made at the jetting, but it ran at 6 to 8 L/100k. After I had it dyno-ed, and the jetting changed, it ran at 4.5 to 6 L/100k. And the dyno guy was really happy to work on a bike he didn't have to spend half a day removing plastics to get get access to hook up. With the dyno, you don't have to guess at the jetting.

Normally, when you fit up a more free breathing intake and or exhaust, you need to jet richer. It's counter intuitive to me for it to run richer with pods and no other changes..   <scratching head>
I think I'd look for other issues.

Pods being over oiled can choke it.
