what the best approach for a stripped fill plug on a 5 speed?

I have a 5 speed case that has a completely stripped fill plug in the case. timesert? helicoil?  20mm-ish I think?  that has to be a pricey timesert kit id assume

  It's possible this may be a job that a machine shop could do for what you'll have to spend to get a kit
that you may only use once . For instance , in the middle 80's after a decade in the trade I decided I would
get a selection of heli-coil kits that I'd found most useful . Today I have over 95 percent of those kits left  .

Aluminized duct tape, a rubber freeze plug, or wine cork should keep the air in there.

I helicoiled mine, taking care that no swarf  got into the casing and the insert tool retained the helicoil tag that breaks off.
Drained and replaced transmission oil.

Personally I think timeserts are way better but that's a great offer right there.

I used Helicoil on a stripped sump pump drain plug and it worked great.
