Tires for '98 EV ?
« on: November 01, 2020, 04:22:38 PM »
110/90-18 Front
140/80-17 Rear

The front selection is somewhat limited and the rear selection is very limited.

Suggestions ?

I'm partial to Metzler 880.

That's all I've ever run on my EV.  The wear like iron and I find they handle well.  Many here disagree about the handling.  And they aren't particularly cheap for bias tires.

Really happy with Michelin Pilot Activ on my '98 V11EV.

It's hard to find a matching set for this bike.

So far, I've found Pirelli Sport Demons and Metzler 888's

Add D404's, Shinko 230's, and a few others, if you can do with a 130/90 on the rear .vs 140/80.

I agree with running a 100/90 on the front and drop the forks a bit. Run a 130/90 on the rear too. I also use Shinko 712's.

A 140 on the rear clears the swing arm by just thousanths of an inch. As the tire wears, after thousands of miles, it's shape might widen just a bit. Drove me crazy trying to find the source of vibration my bike started having at slow speeds.

Shinko TourMasters from Dennis Kirk is under $150 a set. I wouldn't put Shinko's on my Norge, but they work great on a California. Shinko used to be Yokohama, a well known brand.

Me too, but the last I checked Bridgestone had dropped one of the stock sizes.  So, change or modification is forced.

I have an aging set of the Bridgestone BT-45s on my Convert that are decent and have good grip in wet and dry conditions. A set of Pirelli Route 66s on deck, will put them on in the Spring.

I belive the stock size rear was 130/90 before 02... but either way I went with the Shinko tourmasters on my 02 cali stone and love them. I kept the stock 110 front though.  Much nicer then the old lazertecs I took off!!

I've mounted a lot of the 880's and the newer 888's - but never actually ran a set on one of my bikes.  They are most excellent tires.

It used to be that we were wary of buying cheap tires that were made in weird places, but I have a set of Michelin Commander II's here - made in Thailand - and have seen many name-brand tires made in Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, etc.   Shinko is (like someone else said) made in South Korea and is the old Yokohama brand.

Our '00 Jackal has Avon "Storm Rider" 110/90 F; 130/90 R.  The EV has 110/80 F Avon "Storm" and 140/70 R "Azaro".  These are all made in England.

So, I am leaning toward a set of those Shinko tires..... but, which one ?  712's ?  230's ?  I'd have to run a 100/90 .vs 110/90 front if choosing the 712's, as they don't offer that 18 in a 110 width.  Each offer the 130/90-17 rear.

I agree that stepping down one size width will tend to improve handling. Does this also have any effect when riding two up?

110/90-18 Front
140/80-17 Rear

The front selection is somewhat limited and the rear selection is very limited.

Suggestions ?

I got the 07 Calvin from antmanbee with a fresh set of shinko 705s back in April I've put 8k miles on it since and ill probably get another 2k from them before cross show only thing is they are noisy and can feel a little bit more vibration on some surfaces but would get another set. I used the same on my 07 Bonneville with sidecar when I was on st croix in the virgin islands because the roads were so bad and I had a steep driveway

I used the 230 on my cali stone. Reviews seem to show they last a little longer then the 712, and they were only around 10 bucks more. I dont have enough miles on them to really rate how long they will last, but they ride and handle well.

Kevin I go with the exact sizes you list in your original post on my '00 Jackal, and found Michelin Pilot Activ's no problem to source or run. Last bought a pair this spring.  Very happy with them.

Pilot Activ's wore like...marshmallows on the LMIII. Sticky but high priced and low mileage IMO. They were fun while they lasted!
