My T3 gearbox has begun to act very strangely. I am hoping that someone may have an idea of how to proceed before I start tearing things apart. Despite all of the miles on the Guzzis that I have owned, I have never had a problem with a transmission, and have only had one apart when I was resurrecting my v7 Sport. At that time, I was only checking for wear and replacing seals and bearings, and there were no other problems with that one.
The T3 has 50,000 miles on it. I have had it since 1999. I replaced the clutch at around 40,000 miles. Everything has been working as it should, until recently. Lately, about half the time when I shift into 2nd gear, it sort of "slips" before it positively engages. It feels like an old automatic transmission when the bands would slip. It does this both upshifting and downshifting. It never does it in any other gear, nor does it make any strange noises. It doesn't always misbehave, either. I drained the oil and also put a slim magnet into the box, but got no metal particles out. I thought perhaps it had sheared some teeth or maybe a bearing is going bad. The linkage was pretty worn out, so I replaced that. It greatly improved shifting in all gears, but still the "slipping" in 2nd gear persists. All other gears are fine. Any ideas?
