Better exhaust header gasket?
« on: February 12, 2025, 09:59:03 AM »
Is there a better one that seals tighter in an 850 LM1 head to header? Getting a little leak on the right side after reinstalling with new gaskets. Everything is aligned and torqued properly.

In the 42 years I've been riding and working on Guzzis, I've never found the need for anything other than the original type.

So I must have done something wrong there...can't imagine what.

Are they the correct size? Check for nicks or dents on the gasket. Check for nicks or dents on edge of head pipe. If problem persists, use two gaskets. I also use nickel anti seize on the gaskets.

I snug up the headpipes first , by themselves so the rest of the exhaust system does not influence the fit at this stage. Then I mount the rest of it, gradually getting into place. I use nickel antisneeze as well and I only replace the gasket if it gets squished too thin to seal. I make sure there is no bind on the system as I massage it into place to help eliminate cracks.

Maybe the stud is pulling out of the head.  Threads stripping.

Make sure exhaust is mounted tight down stream.

Ha! I was going to suggest there are two in there now causing a leak…it might take a dental pick to get them out. Smashed in there completely they can look like there isn’t one

This was exactly the case ,when I first got my Convert. There were 2 gaskets, and you could hardly tell, after pulling the first one out, that there was a second pressed in there tightly.
