Coming back from a camping trip I stopped beside the road, when I tried to start again nothing, just the faint click of the relay, the headlight was showing sign of low Voltage. I unplugged it under the bucket to avoid any further drain.
Luckily I was stopped on a hill so bump starting was easy.
After running for a few miles I tried the starter again, nothing
I had to stop for gas so I took the opportunity to give the wiring the once over
There is no charging fuse on this bike, the red wire goes straight to the battery.
This is the bike I nursed back from Denver with a charging problem I replaced the regulator then so it's about 3 years old.
Inspected the yellow wires at the alternator, look ok and I got a circuit using my trouble light.
It has the extra ground to the case.
I concluded the regulator might be missing a reference so I hot wired the black wire (male pin) directly to the battery.
Got a push start and I was away.
Later on I tried the starter again, this time it worked so I assume my hot wire fix worked.
When I get a chance I will try to figure out what really happened and get back, in the meantime the bike is sitting all covered in mud in disgrace.
I think it might be pissed off that the Cali II got new tires the other day and it didn't ???
I took a bit of care installing the new regulator when I got the bike back home from Denver a couple of years back
I'm not in any rush to get this fixed, I would rather find an explanation, I will put the wiring back to stock and go from there.
