Norge starts for a couple of seconds then stalls
« on: June 03, 2015, 08:31:34 PM »
So up here in NH its inspection season so I went out to my 2008 Norge, hopped on, started it and then less than a minute later she stalled out. Now mind you it has been raining for a few days and I have a newborn so the bike hasn't been run all that much in the past month.

Here is what I have done thus far... Ensured I have a charged battery, clean air filter and filled with fresh gas (though I couldn't actually start her up because the baby was sleeping).

Bike has been running like a champ and this is the first time I have had any issues.

So assuming the fresh gas doesn't help, where should I go as my next step? Again it starts for a few seconds, idles around 1200 and then drops out to a stall. I do live near the dealer up here but would prefer to hang on to what little cash I have.

Thanks,

Rob

Congrats on the newborn! Life is good.

My first thoughts are too wonder if it's stalling at the point when it changes from open loop to closed loop operation.

If so I'm thinking it's time to check for codes, in case it's temp sensor or O2 sensor related, or maybe the Idle Bypass valve is shutting down prematurely?

maybe the fuel line in the tank between pump and filter got loose? Does it sound normal when you put key on? listen with cap open

Yes it does sound normal when I put the key in, can hear what I think would be some sort of fuel priming process.

Yup, pump is working but has the hose come off the pump?

Open the tank and have a peer in there with a torch, (Not a match!) when you turn the ignition on. If you see fuel swirling around like a bastard the hose has probably come off.

Just looked in, did not look like fuel was swirling at all but the tank is pretty full right now. I will try to take a little video of it in a couple of minutes and post it up to YouTube. Maybe you will hear something that I'm not.

Alrighty I just took some video. Maybe new gas is helping and something was gummed up but still sounds like at low idle it is misfiring.

I'm going to be uploading a bunch of videos under my account if you want to look at more of the running

Well now you are asking for me to do actual work! That will have to wait till later. Obviously I will check the outside cylinders first. Wet plug = no spark?

MORE COWBELL!!!!!!

Seriously though, taking pot shots at this or that possible problem is the hard way. Start with the basics, make sure the valves are right, check the plug condition, check the throttle bodies for crud and rebalance, reset TPS. It could well be the idle motor which is easy to check with GuzziDiag. By then it will most likely either be fixed or you will know what is wrong.
Good luck!

Alright looks like I need to research Guzzidiag and TPS as I don't know what they are, I should probably know what TPS is though. Sorry newb here but once I understand something I generally can get things rolling again.

TPS = throttle position sensor

Guzzidiag = software for diagnosing and tuning late model Guzzis.

Thanks!

Just pulled outside plugs, look normal, looks like I'm going to have to pull the inside ones, and if I need to remove the tank I might as well check valve clearances.

Rob, Don't sweat it, didn't mean to go over your head. Hard to tell what people's experience level is so I just assume and then if needed work on from there.
Here's the thread on GuzziDiag:
http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=69168.0

You will need a couple of low cost items to connect to the bike to use the software, they are shown in the tutorial. I got them from Amazon.

If you don't want to scale the learning curve now just get the dealer to check it. Or send me a PM if you need help.

Thanks Hunter, I will definitely be looking into it as I like to learn new things and skills. Previous experience was bringing a 1978 Honda CB750K back to life but that is just checking spark, fuel and air. If you had those three you were 90% there and then it was just tuning the carbs / valves.

It definitely is misfiring. Not sure if the TPS would have anything to do with that. But again I need to look into the inside plugs and valves.

just as your 750k honda, it needs fuel and sparks to make it go. You can also take one plug out, hold the plug to the head so that it gets ground, start it, so it runs on one side, whatch the plug as it is starving. Do the sparks stop before it is dead?
Could be the sensor that gets the cam position.

You can read errors in the dash, maybe that gives a clue. You need to go into the service menu. I think code is 28315 Do you have the servicemanual?.

If you have errors write them down, and clear them. Start bike again and see if you get them back.

Yes I do have the service manual on my iPad here, I will see if anything is logged in there.

I am betting your fuel filter fell apart in the tank.
Pull the tank and check the filter.

Alright I checked the left side valves, everything was good there, decided to look into removing the inner spark plug... Yea right. Possible I'm sure but I didn't feel like monkeying around with removing the air box again. So tomorrow I will check the right side valve clearances and see if anything is out of whack. If everything is good I will look into the fuel filter, I love siphoning gas

I really, strongly, recommend that at this point you take it to someone who knows what they're doing.

At the moment you're just mucking about with things with neither the tools or understanding of the problem or what you are trying to achieve. If you start fiddling and twiddling with things on a W5AM bike you can seriously screw stuff up and make it really difficult to get right again.

If you want to learn more about your bike and how to keep it running well there are lots of people who will be more than willing to advise and assist but the current 'Let's just throw darts at the board and hope one of them sticks in' strategy is not the way to start or achieve your goal.

As has been pointed out. A likely culprit is the fuel hose in the tank. Why persist in farting about with other stuff unless you've checked this first?

Ha that's not the way I was raised. If something gets messed up further because of 'mucking' around en its on me. HOWEVER... What I am doing is not simply mucking around, I have elicited feedback from a group of "Internet experts" here, I can read technical service manuals and have a knowledge set that gives me confident in my ability. As you might have guessed I am a highly educated individual, maybe not in the subject at hand but the skills to 'learn' something is not universal. From my "working knowledge" that I have now experienced I hope I can help another do it yourselfer in their endeavors IF they so choose.

Rant over. I pulled the right side valve cover, those valves were a little closed on the exit so I put them back to spec. I removed the fuel pump and the place I purchased the bike from definitely changed the filter (all metal, made in the USA) so I did not changes that out. It the girl back together and she is running better.

So could have been bad gas like what you get from eating Taco Bell, that valve being a little squeezed, who knows but she is running fine now.

Through some of my other research I learned about this 'canisterectomy' and I see that happening in the future!
