I'm embarrassed to admit, but about a month ago I was tinkering with the B1100, the phone rang, and I left the ignition on for 24hrs.

When I went to start the bike the next day the battery was completely drained, no sounds, even the flashing red security light was gone.

I charged the battery back up at 2amps for 12 hours, and all seemed fine. However the other day, it didn't have enough juice to turn the motor over. Did running down to 0 damage the battery?

It easily sulfated the plates and damaged it.
If you have a desulfator, you may want to try that.

Yep .... complete discharge is the worse thing that could happen to agm type battery.

I think that you meant to say, "absorbent glass matt". If you have an AGM (absorbent glass matt) battery, the Optima battery is also the same technology.

So, if you have a Gel cell battery, I think that the party is over for the battery because it's highly likely to be fried and not fixable. But, if you have an AGM, there is some hope for reviving it. Hope this helps.

I believe if you work the battery it will be able to restore itself.
If it doesn't have enough grunt to wind the bike over run it down to 12 Volts with the headlight then charge it back up again.

The link refers to smart chargers confused as to whether a battery is 6V or 12V, I have seen this quite often with smart chargers.
Could this be the problem, the battery was so low your charger couldn't recognize it?

If you have an old 12V wall wort from a printer or something, they make great trickle chargers, too dumb to care if the battery has 3 or 6 cells.

2amps is not a lot. I would charge it again until you have 12.8 volts at rest.
Then maybe look a parasitic drains that runs you battery down

On the new bikes the electronics drain the battery down, maybe Wayne or one you Electrical Wizards can adviise on maybe pulling a fuse when not riding the bike to prevent this.

Thanks all. Yes Jackson, you are right, it is a AGM. Seems to be holding fine, I'll monitor it and see what happens over the next couple weeks.

I would check the voltage reading at the battery every day and if it's still holding where it should be after a week, I think you'll be good to go.
I once had an Optima that went totally dead due to leaving the ignition switch on. The local battery shop told me that it was ready for the scrap pile but I read an article about how deep cycle batteries can be saved and I was able to resuscitate it. It lasted another 3 years.

The battery is toast. Trying to desulfate an AGM is an effort in futility.

Say the battery appears to work OK for a few weeks, you gonna trust it for a longer trip only to have it fail 40 miles for the nearest hodunk town?

What's a new battery cost, same as an oil change and a few tanks of fuel? Every time you ride and turn it off you'll be wondering if it will start.
