Hello all, just a quick question regarding the smallblock transmission oil change.

I believe the oil should be drained from (C) and topped up via (A) but what's (B) for and why shouldn't you refill via it?

If you mean the rear drive. A is the oil level hole, fill until the oil just starts to run out. B is the oil fill and C is the drain.

Yes I was referring to the rear drive. I was just curious because the how-to guide I've seen show people filling the rear drive via (A), not (B).

Just out of curiosity, could the rear drive be filled via the breather (I.e. If you undid the bolt) or would the oil end up somewhere it shouldn't. Obviously it would be best practice to fill it via (A) to prevent overfilling.

Yea, PITA filling through what was normally the level plugs on big blocks.  The fill holes on both the tranny and rear are on the sides!

Yes, but it's a much smaller hole.  I always measure the proper amount, then pour it in.

I never use that A hole to fill the drive, I always use the B hole.  I also always measure the amount, same for the other gearbox.  I lean the bike way over and lean it on a milk crate to fill the gearbox.  Small blocks are very sensitive to gearbox level, 1 full liter is a must.

The level hole only works if the swingarm is horizontal. 

Put it on the center stand, remove the two top shock bolts and put blocks under the rear tire until the swingarm is level and hole A should be at the right height for the oil level.  At least this works on a V50 Monza.

There is a baffle below the hole at B that makes it very slow to pour oil in even after pulling the breather.  Hole at A is larger with no baffles.

I always fill mine via the breather hole. I use a large syringe to do mine.

As said above the level plug is only of use if the swingarm is horizontal .

If found on my tt I get about 100ml in before the level plug is starting to weep.. that makes it 70ml short
