New 1200 NTX Owner Where do I start?
« on: July 22, 2016, 12:03:10 PM »
First off I'd like to give a shout out to Victor who has the privilege of being the first NTX owner I came in contact with on the road in Silverton, CO.  :thumb:

I'd also like to say hi to the group of fine gentleman of good taste (also on NTXs) I bumped into briefly in Rico, CO at the Enterprise Bar & Grill.

Thanks to all for the NTX tips!

Now that I'm back in the 'hood and working on the ride where do I start the mods?

I'd actually like to start with the necessary and work my way to the farkles. So far I've added the Givi Trekker 58 liter top box (I'm a bit wary of the plastic Givi mount tho, it seems to vibrate/shake quite a bit) and a SWMotech tank bag.

I've done the initial valve adjustment and changed the fluids at 550 miles before heading out west. She's closing in on 3K miles now and I plan on doing a full service with TPS reset and throttle body sync.

First question: What is the proper Guzzi Diag software for a 2016 NTX?  I've seen several versions in the Guzzi Diag thread but haven't seen a listing of which versions go to which bike. I did order the cabling from England through the linky so I should be good to go in a week or two.

Basically I hope to learn from the experienced here and am trying to avoid the 'mod/unmod/remod properly' syndrome.

Thanks!

Welcome!

Guzzi diag- get the latest from the source: http://www.von-der-salierburg.de/download/GuzziDiag/
There is a how to here: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=69168.0

The largest collection of Stelvio specific forum posts: http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/moto-guzzi-stelvio-merged-threadfest.113158/

My blog of an owners trip through Guzzi ownership, mods, etc..: http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/

Things to know:
see the blog for sticker removal, GPS, heated grips, powerlet sockets, horn upgrade, upgrade the keys for the bags, bag liners, etc.

Aux lamps- MAKE SURE  YOU ADD A FUSE HOLDER FOR THE AUX LAMPS (don't use them until you do): http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2013/05/fog-lamp-fuse-holder.html
Try to protect the wiring as best you can by wrapping the extra in the rubber boot. Sooner or later you will be replacing with LEDs: http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2015/11/fog-lamp-replacement.html

Upgrade to the euro turn signals: http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2013/04/euro-turn-signal-conversion.html

I was very happy with the SWmotec case for the rear bag. I have some extra racks for mounting these cases. PM me and I can hook you up: http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2013/07/revised-rear-rack-for-swm-topcase.html

Keep one (or two) of these as a spare: http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2015/07/exhaust-gasket-replacement-somewhat.html

I keep a spare spoke nipple/o-ring in my set, but rim leaks seem to be VERY rare with owners

Buy a set of spark plug cap replacements and get ready to put them on at some point: http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2015/09/spark-plug-cap-replacememt.html

Large tool tube mount. I have a few of these racks/tubes if you would like one, PM me: http://stelviontx.blogspot.com/2015/10/large-tool-tube-mount.html

During the first service, it would be a good idea to go over all the fasteners. The motor mounts under the tank are known to be problematic (loose) for some.

Good luck, enjoy!

I would make sure the aux lights have the fused pigtail. You can order that at AF1 I think. I would also change the spark plug ends to the SB05E NGK's.

I would change those silly mirror directionals and get the Euro turn signals and Sport mirrors.

The Guzzidiag version you want is version V0.47. That is the most current. In the program, it gives you basically all the models in a drop down menu.

You'll also want the appropriate reader and writer which for your ECU is the IAW5x

Other than that, just ride the wheels off of it.

Xlratr on here has developed several maps specifically for the NTX - he has a performance and an economy version, great improvements that fix the 3500rpm surging.  Save your stock map via GuzziDiag and load up one of the new ones - it's easy to save / write back and forth.

Good recommendations above:  fuse on the driving lights, Euro signals and mirrors, check fasteners.  It will just get smoother with more miles, enjoy!

Hold on to your wallet.  Put some mileage on it.  Like 10k miles.  While your riding it figure out changes that you'd like to make to it.  Give it some time before throwing money at it.  Ride it.  Otherwise you'll keep throwing money at it in the pursuit of the "perfect ride".  Eventually with that thinking, you'll get frustrated and want to sell it "in pursuit of the prefect ride".

Thanks to all for the input!

I know about throwing $$$ at problems!

I haven't experienced any real problems yet @just less than 3k.  :thumb:

I did do the aux light fuses before I left but forgot to mention it. My dealer, Cadre Cycle, was nice enough to include them with the bike.

Toma Nova, I'd be interested in MPG numbers for the economy tune. Right now I'm averaging ~50 MPH on easy riding back roads and ~42 MPH  on my 75-80 MPH commute.

The rough running/surging from 3500-3900 RPM is not a deal breaker but If I could vanquish it and keep the MPGs I'd be all in for a reflash.

Kirb, I have a Givi top case but the plastic mounting plate leaves something to be desired. Is there a metal/aluminum/stainless mounting plate alternative  that will accept a Givi top case? I was actually looking at the Nomadic Racks KTM 990 flat rack as it appears that with a new set of mounting holes it do the trick and it is already Givi Mono-Lock compatible.  That said I'd rather get a plug play rack with no mods necessary.

My only other question would be has anyone used the 'Pads' system from Guzzi for their services? It's a bit pricey but it does update to the mothership.

You don't need PADS... Just the Guzzidiag and cables.

I never tried to mount a givi top case, so I can't comment on the racks out there.

PADS is an inexpressibly shitty tool. Apart from for Cali 1400's which use the 7SM mine stays gathering dust in the draw of my computer trolley at work. I use Guzzidiag for everything else because it is simple, intuitive, always works and if for some reason it disconnects while you're loading a map you just re-boot and start again. With PADS if that happens you need to ask the factory for a reboot code, (With the 7SM and maybe the MUIG3? Not sure.) with the W5AM it can brick the ECU. I'd rather tear my one remaking testicle off and eat it in a bun than have to be dependent on PADS!

I think the best mod I did to my 13 Stelvio if fill and empty the tank as many times as you can, the "mods" will become apparent then.  This prevents the "mod and unmod" cycle!  After that sage advice I suggest adding a inline fuse the aux lights, and replace the mirrors when the glass vibrates out of the originals.

I had a '13, and the list is as follows pretty much in order as needed.

Added a throttle lock, went with a Vista-Cruise that had to be sanded down thinner to fit properly.
Added a GPS mount.
Shielded and regularly checked aux light wiring at first, then didn't worry about it.
Disconnected the charcoal canister, removed it and used space under seat for a small compressor and tire repair kit.
Figured out the MPG average of the dash must have been using an equation for imperial gallons, not US gallons.
Fabbed up a air cover for the oil cooler for riding in cold weather to prevent over-cooling.
Fitted Euro turn signal/mirrors as my left mirror fell apart at around 10K miles.
Occasionally put an Air Hawk seat pad on when I knew I was going to be riding more than 600 miles a day.

Totaled the bike at about 20K miles, hit a deer.  That winter was planning on lubing the possible dry bearings in swing arm, steering head... which I have found necessary on a couple late model Guzzis.

Compared to a lot of other bikes I have owned, not really that much to do.  Good luck with yours!
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

PM Xlratr here for info about the ECO map - I'm running his previous version performance map and it's a huge improvement over stock.  I need to upload the more recent performance map as he found an additional trim table to enhance.

Changing maps via GuzziDiag is very easy - laptop in your garage with some cables.  No need to remove the ECU or send it anywhere for a "reflash", simply save the OE map then change to one of the several enthusiast maps available.  Read through the GuzziDiag thread.

My calculated mileage is ~38mpg but I liberally twist the throttle - the dash MPG is notoriously optimistic.

and this is Dan with his new NTX.

calling these guys 'gentlemen' is really a leap of faith.  Dan's wife is a real trooper!

We were surprised to see another NTX at a bar in an area where there were no houses or businesses for miles.  my NTX in the background.

Darren, I kind of figured out through use the fuel gauge 'bars' and MPG were done in Imperial Gallons. I've been figuring my mileage the old fashioned way at each fuel fill up. 6 Imp gallons = 7.2 US gallons and  8.7 US Gallons = 7.25 Imp gallons. I'm guessing each bar on the dash = 1 Imp gallon and there is ~ 1.25 Imp gallon reserve.

I was wondering if there wasn't a way to switch the fuel measurement to US gallons in the computer but did not see it covered in the manual.

Thanks Tom! I'll keep my money in my wallet and stick to Guzzi Diag.

Guzzi Ride, I'll have to get up early next Saturday and hit up Fuel then cruise on up to Cadre. Hope to meet you there.

toma nova, Thanks for the tips! I'll be PMing Xlratr on the eco map. If'n I can remove the rough response between 3500-3900 RPMs and maintain good MPGs I'll be all over it. Myy biggest concern is maintaining a 300 mile range. As long as I can consistently stay above 40 MPG I should be good to go.

The mod I haven't seen posted yet (did I miss it?) is the breather valve from the CARC. Both sets of NTX riders I bumped into stated the breather can/will allow water into the rear end while fording deeper streams. Anyone else have/know of this issue? Seems an easy fix and I was placing that mod at the top of my list.

Goodridge brake line and fitting, banjo bolt to fit the breather vent.  Mine just tucks up near the battery under the seat.

There is more info on the ADV thread or on the other Guzzi site.
