I really like the Allman Bros. and CCR. Creedence Gold was the first "album" I bought (1972) when I was about 12 years old. Then I bought Santana's first album.... that was awesome, wore that out. In 1975 a friend came over and handed me an 8-track and said "you have to hear this!!!" and we plugged in "In the Morning Day" and that was all she wrote. That Leslie speaker throwing sound from the Hammond was magical.

The first concert I ever went to was Journey at the Stanford Theater in Palo Alto in 1976 http://www.stanfordtheatre.org/ they just released their second album Look Into the Future. We sat in the second row. There was nobody in the first row. They played their entire first and second album. Journey was "our" band. We listened to their music all the time; in the car on the way to Tahoe to go skiing blasting Kohoutek as we put on our gear in the parking lot.

Our advance man was Lorne Greene, and then we sent Shatner and Chief Dan George, then the musicians led by Gordon Lightfoot, and finally we took over comedy with Second City (Chicago still doesn't realize we snuck it out from under them), the Ghostbusters, and all the rest. You fought back with Pauly Shore and PeeWee Herman, but that was a feeble and doomed effort!

We'll gradually take over your society and leave you with nothing but universal healthcare, a better sense of humor, and good manners...

I have hearing damage from a very young age that makes it difficult to understand most lyrics by most singers so just the instrumentals influences me more. The first first music I ever heard through a quality stereo with quality headphones was Santana's Abraxas WOW!

To my ear, the premier American rock and roll band right now is Dan Baird and Homemade Sin.

The bass player is from Sweden but the band plays American rock and roll at a level long forgotten. Dan Baird is bar none, the best songwriter of his genre and his genre is Rock and Effing Roll. He is also one hell of a guitar player but he puts himself down in the mix, choosing instead to let Warner E. Hodges represent which he does with a vengeance. Nobody is playing stuff like this anymore! Zero crap content, zero filler - straight rock and roll, no chaser. The current tour t-shirt says "Unapologetic Rock and Roll."  I just saw them at Eddie's Attic last week and right now they are doing the American leg of a world tour so go see 'em. They are headed to Australia next month...

Well, Dan has come quite a long way since the Georgia Satellites and he has forged his own brand. As someone who was raised on rock and roll and misses it dearly, I have to say finding Homemade Sin was like finding a diamond. As I said, it's not for everyone. It is however, distinctly American and not a Skynyrd wanna be. KISS was never really very musical, kinda like Cher. Whatever works for you!

I have also secretly promoted a secret Canadian agenda, in music at least. IMHO, one of the best bands of all time, the Tragically Hip. A early love of hockey, Neil Young, Rush and hearing the Hip back in '89ish damn near turned me Canadian!
