American Rock and Crap
« on: March 15, 2017, 06:42:43 PM »
Dusty was whining so much about American rock on the Stone vs Beatles stuff.  Let's hear it for American rock.  We can yack about the Allmans, we won't go to Grand Funk, Steppenwolf...but no bad words on The Doors (please).

Well, as much of a Canada booster as I may be, I'd have to admit that Levon Helm injected a fair bit of Americana (dang close to our Fearless Leader's home, I believe, but closer still to Memphis) into The Band.

Like CSNY (Canadian, Canadian, Brit, Yank), the blend of different backgrounds gave a richer result than would otherwise have been the case.

Do we need a separate thread to demonstrate how Canadian musicians (just like Canadian comedians) are advancing the grand scheme for Canada to invade the United States?

I think the Band (i.e., Robbie) (& Levon)  had more Americana than any band of all time.

I'll take a load off Fanny, get on to Cripple Creek..... but the Night .....

Well, Robbie was from the Six Nations and Toronto, and Ronnie Hawkins was pretty much an adopted Canadian - lived in Ontario from the mid-'60s on!

Mind you, a lot of us from other parts of Canada consider that southwest part of Ontario a lot like Arkansas...

I walked miles of barbed wire, use a cobra snake for a necktie
Got a brand-new house on the roadside, made from rattlesnake hide
Got a brand-new chimney made on top, made from a human skull
Come on, Robbie, let's take a little walk, tell me who do you love?

Last time I checked Canada was part of North America. :boozing:
Besides that, the Band's founder(Levon Helm) was from Arkansas.

You are correct , and Canada isn't America . However , bands like the The Guess Who , Lighthouse, BTO , Rush , and a few others are so much a part of the American landscape we kind of adopted them as our own . No offense intended . Heck , the most rabid fan of the Allman Bros I ever met was a Canadian from Regina , girl was a fool for Dreams and some of their other early stuff .

Like I said elsewhere - it's all part of our secret Canadian plan to invade the US, using actors, comedians and musicians. Our advance man was Lorne Greene, and then we sent Shatner and Chief Dan George, then the musicians led by Gordon Lightfoot, and finally we took over comedy with Second City (Chicago still doesn't realize we snuck it out from under them), the Ghostbusters, and all the rest. You fought back with Pauly Shore and PeeWee Herman, but that was a feeble and doomed effort!

We'll gradually take over your society and leave you with nothing but universal healthcare, a better sense of humor, and good manners...

Definitely.

I would recommend the following related items:

Robert Palmer's Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, backed by George and the Little Feat gang as well as other Nawlins notables (killer version of Sailin' Shoes!)

The live on-the-air recording of Lowell George and Bonnie Raitt at Ultrasonic Studios 1972 - including great versions of Under the Falling Sky, Can't Find My Way Home, A Apolitical Blues, and The Sky is Crying

And of course, anything at all by Ry Cooder.

Let's not forget that Steppenwolf (mentioned in the initial post),  is a Canadian/American band initially formed in Toronto.   :thumb:

So much great American music, though!
