Craven panniers for V7?
« on: May 26, 2017, 04:32:56 AM »
Does anybody have experience with Craven luggage.  Looks like the Comet side cases would look good on a V7 Anniversario.

Penderic did a nice job putting original Cravens on his V7.

If you search, you'll find a complete thread on the restoration of the bags, but there is a pic of it finished in this thread:

I think they look great!

I think that Craven panniers look good on anything. This photo is of a 1970 Ambassador that I have that was originally fitted with Cravens at the Texas dealer in 1970. I have tossed the ugly seat and I am in the process of doing a restoration. Actually, this is the bike I should have purchased in 1970... instead, for $200 less, I bought a 1970 BSA 441, which lasted 8,000 miles before the engine blew up. I loved that bike though.

I just bought a new V9 Roamer and ordered a set of Craven 'Comet' panniers and a Snowdon top box to put on it. The quality of the new Craven bags is outstanding, and the people in the UK were great to deal with, with prompt shipping.
I am sold on Cravens, and have even read Ken Craven's book, about his travels back in the day. My only complaint might be the pictures on the Craven website...

This is a Vincent Black Shadow fitted with the Comet/Snowdon bags. Now, how many of us have a Vincent?  Lee Davis, New Mexico

I did a photo essay on my vintage Craven restoration years ago ...

Also some pics on the ADV site thread here .... http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/craven-are-back.882754/

Took me some effort to make the hardware to mount the bags.

Some other pic uploaded ...

Hmmm. I like the Comets where you positioned them  :thumb: The top box looks high compared to the early mounts. I had a D rack mount with a plain luggage rack that would be used to mount a top box flush. The bottom of the top box would be level with the top of the seat.

I had a set of Comets and the D Rack mount used a luggage rack that the top box would be attached to.

I certainly agree that the top box is positioned a little too high. That was the rack that I happened to have. I think I shall cut it down and fabricate a luggage rack base instead. I think it would be better to have a large soft bag strapped there, rather than the top box. That way I can carry my sleeping bag/gear/ tent, etc., and it will be a cleaner look. The small Snowdon box is a bit puny.
