RPMs at comfy shift points -- Jackal
« on: October 23, 2017, 02:53:23 PM »
My 2000 Jackal has a bit tall first gear. Shifts up comfy into second at 25mph, into 3rd at 45mph, into 4th at 60, while fifth is strictly a freeway overdrive type thing. No tach... but I believe I am prolly hearing 3500 or 4000 RPM at each shift.

Questions:

Anyone mounted a tach on their Jackal? What tach? How?

if so...

What RPM am I turning ...
at 25mph in 1st? in 2nd?
at 45 in 2nd? in 3rd?
at 60 in 3rd? in 4th?

TIA

Something of a tach addict on my other bikes.

I'll just say, your motor likes to rev, and you don't want to lug this motor like a Harley.. it won't hurt anything to wind her out to 7k or more.. happy to cruise all day 4-5k.
a simple tach like this will give you and idea where your at.

Down the bottom of this thread, theres a table with the speed/rpm for your 8:33 drive.

(I was just looking at that yesterday)

I have an EV with a tach. But it's just not needed, I just shift when it feels right> BTW for normal riding that's about 4000 RPM. The bike speaks to the rider if you listen/feel. For normal cruise I shift to 5th at about 60 mph. For top end speed, stay in 4th.

While I am no guzzi guru, I have found that the motor in my Jackal is happiest at mid to higher RPM. It seems to smooth out at a higher engine speed. When the motor is warm, and I want to have fun, I will run it up to 45-50 in first then shift into second and run it thru the gears like that. It will hit a hundred in 4th easier than in 5th. I was delighted to find the reserves of speed and power (such as it is) at the higher RPM range. Don't be afraid to rev the motor. I often find myself in 3rd gear running 55 mph and the motor seems to be at the bottom of the powerband for that gear with enough in reserve for easy passing. Try running it up to 40 in first then shift it. It is a lot of fun.

Yes, let it rev up nicely. No need for a tach. Only time I shift to second around 25 is in a small town that would feel like a quite zone to me. I have the Dunstall replica pipes that are rather loud in the higher rpms. 😎

The engine doesn't even run smooth until 3K rpm. That's all you have to remember, so after you shift to the next gear you should be above 3K accelerating to the next. I normally shift at 5 or above. I prefer the 7/33 gearing instead of a gear I don't use unless I'm over 65mph.
You want to know what mph in each gear is what rpm, well----------I can't remember all that info, especially after a rally.
If it shuts off, skips or goes flat shift.  Now I'm going to have to study the subject cause clearly I haven't been paying attention to it.

I can't even think about 4th until at least 60 and 5th is not even thinking about smooth until mid 70's.

Excellent thread. As my Jackal is the only Guzzi I've ever owned, I've wondered the same. Not worried about it too much, but wondered. This was informative. 3rd gear pushing 5k (now I know!) is an absolute dream!

Don't need it; want it.

I scoped out those charts, but they are all about six gears. My Jackal has just five.

Yes your bike has 5 gears,
On my link, the charts were probably computer generated, you'll notice that the chart's gear 5 & 6 have the same data.

My dumb. I didn't notice that there were more sheets off to the left.
From this, it appears I may not be carrying 1st long enough.

Got that tach coming from Amazon.
I like the way my Indian Scout displays. Has a display flipper switch, flips from speedo to tach to engine temp to trip meter to odo. Best of all, it's got a red light in it, just like a binnacle.

Thanks guys

I wonder if everyone runs their autos in 2nd or 3rd(assuming 4spd)?
No, you dont want to lug the engine but there is no need to spin the snot out of it. If you are at 4rk in 5th thats fine.

The only problem with that chart is the 9-10% optimism built-into Guzzi speedos (on my Vintage, an indicated 70 is a GPS 63mph). Is the chart referring to actual or indicated speed? The digital tach will clarify...

well now, snapping suspenders, the rev limiter is a safety device and as such should be tested on a regular basis.........

Do only the fuel injected bikes have a built in rev limiter? anyone know at what rpm it kicks in at? I have never hit the rev limiter on my aluminum. How about old tontis with a dyna III installed, any rev limiter in that unit? when I ride with some" HD friends" is the only time I have heard a bike hitting the rev limiter, but these guys have a penchant for doing it while parked,in neutral.
