V65 exhaust options
« on: April 09, 2019, 03:57:04 PM »
I am putting together an '84 V65 for track duty. I was curious if anyone has found a lighter alternative for the exhaust? I believe I have the mufflers figured out but I wasn't sure if someone had come across some lighter headers. Mine appear to be double walled and weigh over 12 lbs...
Thanks in advance,

Devon

Hello Devon, welcome.
I have the same concern, agree the chromed factory ones are long and heavy, although mine is a just a street bike. I have hit a dead end so far, I was hoping the LaFranconi competition might work but Harper's is not stocking them anymore.

can't help on the headers, but I am running carbon Agostini's from a V7  on mine.. fit up pretty perfectly, but needed a simple bracket for the hanger, as the v65 frame rails were just about 30mm short of lining up with the mount

Thanks for the replies.

Devildog- Nice looking machine. Looks to be in great shape!

Mayor_of_bbq- I think I recall reading your build thread. I believe you retrofit a later v7 tank on your v65? Thanks for the heads up regarding mufflers. My brother lives in Asheville. Beautiful area!

Perhaps stainless header pipes from Keihan or Armours? I'm not sure how much lighter they'd be though.

Thank you for the links. Nice looking kit and the price isn't terrible. I'm sure shipping would be outrageous! I'll see if they will email some weight specs. Thank you again.

I received a reply from armours. Their kit weighs 5.5 lbs. Nice reduction!

Beware :
'Armours' kindly states the pipes may yellow. 304 stainless has some iron content. Depending on the accuracy of the 304 designation (the grade and blending of the mix iron), the pipes could freckle. (thousands of minor cavities with iron rust), especially if exposed to salts. From experience it can be a constant disappointment. As a track bike perhaps not a problem. R3~

Hi R3,

Thank you for sharing the insight and experience regarding the potential for blemishes in the stainless. As you said, for a track bike it is not a huge concern. I was mainly looking for weight reduction but certainly a valid warning for others to consider!

Thanks again for the replies. Shipping to the US was 65£. Quite spendy but not having to pay VAT was a big help.

the tank is 2010 v7, the Agostini are from a v7II i believe, and the seat/tailpiece is off a v50 Monza

the sidecovers are a work in progress, ideally i will get all of the electrics relocated... im going for that 'open frame' cafe look.  I'm trying to set it so I can either run them, or leave them off..  I have it pretty opened up already, but still some random wires spoiling that look.

you can see the mount points for the V7 cans are a bit aft of the factory passenger peg mount holes. You cant move them further up the exhaust pipe without fouling the crossover, so I had some simple brackets pressed.

I have a set of stainless Keihin silencers on my V50II.  They are beautifully made, slender and produce a deep, but not anti-social, exhaust tone.  The bike's carbs clearly like them better than my previous Dunstall Replicas - runs smoother and stronger.  Keihin is a friendly and responsive company to deal with: they ship promptly, pack securely and make a high-quality product for a reasonable price. The silencers are holding up perfectly after one long riding season - look like new.  Keihin does make headers for the V65, but I have no experience with their headers:  if they are up to the quality of the silencers, I would recommend them strongly.

I put a full system from Keihan on a customer's V50 MkIII. Top notch stuff, fit perfectly, very well made.
