What K&N pods for 1100 Sport??
« on: May 07, 2019, 07:36:42 PM »
Ciao Tutti,

What would be the correct K&N pod filter model, for the Dellortos to flow enough air for the big 1064cc cylinders ??

Was going to put K&N 1250, but came to the conclusion these are too small for such big jugs...

Molto Grazie
Carlito

I'd suggest sticking with the original airbox. It works OK and the filter actually works unlike K&N's

Not trying to influence your decision one way or the other BUT...
I have a like new pair of these - used briefly on a LeMans 1000 - I'd sell for $50 plus shipping.

BTW, my Sport 1100 still wears its airbox.

I kept the stock airbox.  It's pressurized, and performs pretty well with its rectangular air filter.

Consider the science. Oiled media filters are a scam:

Maybe just skip the ugly filters and add a pair of Italian-made Malossi velocity stacks-- they SOUND great!

Same here. With correct jetting it runs well.

Injected 1100 Sports are OK with the airbox, Centauros etc with the same airbox gain >5 HP with long stacks and Uni filters per Daytona C-Kit.

Looks nice too, but here lots of road dust, and straight it goes into your Jugs...

Yes do like the ram air system lots...  But some idiot saw off the top of the air box, revealing the paper filter element...
Really do not understand this type of idiocy, what's the purpose ??
Will get an old top again...
In the mean time decided to part with the whole air box and run K&N...
Also read in Guzziology that the airbox pressurized system confused the dellortos carbs and created a dead zone at mid range...  The solution was to take it out and replace with cone filters...  Guzzi initially did not want the ram air box system, but responded to fashion of the time and EPA...
Guzzi also made on purpose for the 1100 to easily be customizeable, ie take off air box and put cone filters...

With proper getting, there shouldn't be a flat spot. I believe Guzziology also state with the ram air, top end is improved.
I also run a DigiPlex from the Strada, that maybe why I have no flat spot in the midrange.

Haven't got the part number to hand I'll get some measurements on the weekend, however you will need to change the manifolds the stock ones are not designed to support carb and filter, some copper wire re enforced fuel delivery hose works well. The tops of the airbox mod was standard practice with the V11 and some of the calis to get it to breath better, to actually get the air box to start pressurizing you need to be north of 100mph as the intakes are simply in the wrong spot aerodynamically. There is also some oddness with the length of the intake in the midrange, I suspect the people who claim the airbox is fine are the same people who claim the 1960's carbs the bike is saddled with work ok because they haven't experienced anything else.

I and others running the airbox will disagree with you.
With the setup I posted, my 95 spot pulls VERY hard throughout the entire range.

John Wittner when interviewed explained that the 1100 Sport airbox was not developed at all and resulted in lean spots with carbs.  Guzzi knew that there was a market for a “kit bike”, with buyers who might well remove the airbox.  The lean spots can be mitigated to some degree with richer jetting.  The EFI bike is not affected by the same airbox resonance issues, only fuel map issues.

The pressurized airbox thing is a sales technique, the bike doesn't go fast enough for it to make much difference.  However cool air is good.

Keihin FCR41 and stock airbox on mine.

Cold air from the intake tubes can only be a good thing, no matter the speed.

Yes, cold air is a plus for sure.
rocker, have you, or anyone you know, ever switched out the DigiPlex? Seems like that made a big difference with mine.
And Murray, don't know anyone buys a spot for riding at 55mph
