BELCHING STELVIO BREATHER
« on: June 11, 2019, 02:01:27 PM »
Maybe it's been along time since I ran Lola at a consistent 95-100mph, but at a fuel stop I first noticed oil mist on my right boot and weeping around the right valve cover. At home I later discovered the front (main) breather tube was wet and had been coating the front of the engine and skid plate with oil. Me asks Why?

Oil filter is dry, oil level is correct and has been for 3,500 miles. The only thing recent has been the repair to the cracked breather tubes at the rear of each cylinder. That repair consisted of a HD .5" id EGR hose grafted onto the stock breather hose (otherwise in good condition.) I can't imagine that the in-line hose connectors are the cause of some sort of backpressure change.

Again, it has been awhile since I rode Lola that hard. But it wasn't much 80f.  Last thing: The right Jug's exhaust valves were a bit tight prior to readjustment. (There is only 14,500 miles on the clock.)

Any ideas, big block or Stelvio NTX owners?

I’d guess the breather hose is cracked and broken at the top, where it connects to the collector box. Common problem.

I have to agree. The subject leaking occurred after a "mild" ride this afternoon. And it was not coming from the breather tube, but above it.

Damn, I wanted another answer. So, the tank comes off, and I suspect the ABS plumbing, to get access to the canister.

Despite the current niggles: this leak and the SERVICE light and icon coming on, I still love the bike.  Is there something wrong with me?

You don’t have to open the ABS plumbing. Just unfasten the ABS box and nudge it aside. A good tip is to cross the breather hoses—left head to right side of box, and vice versa. That way you minimize the degree of bend you need to force into your new 1/2” hoses.

What Tim has said and NAPA H178 hose is what you want.

Not too hard  - again as Tim states loosen up ABS box and work around it

My 2012 did this at the top and bottom of the left breather hose. The bottom wasn't bad but the top spewed oil all over the left side of the bike. The hoses are junk. 1/2" ID hose is too big. 7/16" ID hose is perfect. Crossing the hoses at the back of the tank/front of the seat is the way to go. It's a tight fit for the 7/16 hose. The 1/2" hose will be pinched. It's a tank off job and the ABS unit does not need to be removed just loosened and wiggled a bit as mentioned above.

Get 7/16 oil hose here. 6' length to make sure you have enough.   https://www.baxtercycle.com/product/716_oil_hose/

I'd much rather ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.

You were right. Breather tube at cannister bad. I used .50" ID tubing for new lines. And, no, it wasn't too bad working around the ABS plumbing. Thanks for the heads up, all.
