Just an enquiry
« on: June 15, 2019, 02:22:20 AM »
Fairly recently my Norge has developed a little thing...
When started from cold or allowed to sit for 10 minutes or so hot, there’s a small trait that manifests. The bike starts and has no more or less rattles and clanks than it has ever exhibited, but here’s the thing...
After about 2 minutes there’s an increase in the rattliness which I can’t define if it’s top end or camchain area, the funny bit is that the sound goes away after 30 seconds or so and does not really re appear as near as I can say.
If someone told me that the oil pressure drops for 20 seconds and then comes back up after running for a couple of minutes, I would say that the symptoms bear that diagnosis out.
Not saying that’s it though and there are no oil warnings or dreaded triangle illuminations.
The oil light goes out immediately upon startup.
My bike is a red ‘07 Norge and they have always been in or around the epicentre of the dud oil pump storm, although mine is outside the bad batch apparently.
Should I just throw in a new pump as a precaution, quite happy to do so.
The valve clearances are always checked every 40,000 k and do not seem to drift much if any and it’s had a camchain and tensioner about 20,000 ago.

I would plumb in a temporary mechanical oil pressure gauge for a few rides just for peace of mind to rule that out. I do that every few years just to get a base reading on my T3 and to see if there are any changes from last time it was tested.

It is the red color that is causing the problem.

Always Motul 10/60 synthetic.
However Agostini’s changed the oil so I don’t know what they used. To be fair though, it was doing it a bit before then.

As was stated, an oil pressure check will tell possible direction to go, almost sounds like an intermittent relief valve hanging up..... Time will tell, Happy Hunting

Ok then..
It is very predictable in it’s behaviour, but will do the gauge thing.
What should the nominal value be..?

The only thing I could find is the rating for the relief valve opening values and are 3.8 - 4.2 kgm. 54 -60 psi  Opening shows to be immediate when reaching those values
so careful observation might lead to a diagnosis. One helpful thing I learned from working on machinery is to use a gauge with a face as big as possible and with smallest increments you can afford. ie 6" gauge 2lb increments. Hope this helps.

Just as a reference my T3 is 48psi at around 3500rpm with a fully warmed engine and 15w-40 rotella oil. And the gauge is of questionable calibration. For you, you just don't want it dropping off during those noisy times and any gauge will tell you that much. What the actual number is is not that important, at least within reason.
