Trailer Tires
« on: July 22, 2019, 11:54:24 PM »
Time to buy a lottery ticket!
I have a Kendon 'stand-up' trailer parked behind my garage.  Near the trash cans.
I walk by every day multiple times.  This morning I had already passed three or four times.
This time I heard a loud  sound like hissing or water running through pipes.  No water here.
Then I realized it was the trailer tire.

These are 10  years old but probably don't have 2K miles of usage.  As it is a standup trailer, when parked the tires aren't even on the ground.
Last month I hauled Regina's EV and my Falcone up into the Sierra Nevada mountains for a northern Guzzi Rally.
Glad it didn't delaminate on the trip.  Why didn't it make noise any other day this month?  Why didn't it make noise when I wasn't nearby to hear?
Dodged a bullet on this one for sure.

So, any advice on the best brand or model for light duty trailer tires?  Trailer and two bikes can't weigh a ton.

TONS of issues with trailer tires you will hear about on any of the RV forums!!  The China built tires of the last 10 years or so are having a ton of issues. Low miles, not old tires, Correct PSI and not over loaded going POOF!!!  Most are having good luck with non china made..  So that's what I would say to look for.

Just make sure to keep the Chinese junk off the trailer and you’ll be fine. + 1 on the  Carlyle brand, I’ve used them on several trailers from light to tandem weight loads with no issues. Bottom line though is miles means little when dealing with aged rubber, they do break down over time.

Yikes !

We had to replace some trailer tires and discovered the wide variance in tire quality.  Some 2-ply tread, some were 4-ply.  Most simply looked cheap and they were all manufactured off-shore.

Took a while, but we found some Made In USA 6-ply tires.

You dodged that bullet!
Ever seen a worn out trailer tire? Me either!
Trailer tires are always too small, overloaded, run too fast and too old.   They should be replaced every 4 years or so regardless of use. And go up on capacity and size if you can. Also, The Fickle Finger of Fate seems to be repelled by carrying a good spare.
As s1120 mentioned it's a hot topic in the RV world where a tire failure can rip out the area around it and cost lots of $$$$.
I'm glad you didn't have it fail on the road!

UV (sunshine), is deadly on tires. Be certain to change out valve stems, as well.  Check wheel bearings, re-pack and adjust at least every other year.  Keep the tires covered when not in use. R3~

Run them at max rated pressure so they will deliver rated load capacity and throw them away at the end of five years.
