Damning with faint praise.
« on: August 01, 2019, 04:28:07 PM »
I thought this was a rather strange way of promoting the V85.  This was in an email I received today that talked about a Moto Guzzi Open House without any mention of where it was to take place.  Maybe I missed something ................ ???

The V85 TT has also been equipped with a brand new 853cc engine that is more efficient and powerful than the V-twin in the V9 range.

Should the marketing dept slam their own product line to promote the V85?

Not a very good marketing technique, not to mention that the majority of the people who read the ad won't even know that there is such a thing as a V9, much less ever having seen or ridden one for comparison.

Contrarian point of view:

Maybe the think the V9 is awesome and the V85 is even better.

"The V85 motor is EVEN BETTER than the V9."

It isn't contrarian, what you posted is exactly what Guzzi marketing should have said in this email to me.  I felt like sending it to me was a mistake, that perhaps it was an internal document that somehow made it into the public domain.

I guess I was suggesting that's what they meant.

But maybe they aren't as good as we want...

Steve, it's been ages!  Good to hear from you.  I'll always remember my fly and ride to Georgia, when I took delivery of the 2012 Griso 8vSE.  Probably the best looking machine I've ever owned!

One of the endearing things about Guzzi P.R. over the years is the occasional lapse into innocent truth, regardless of commercial consequences.

Does Guzzi have a USA headquarters and staff, or was their posting originating in Italy? Language driven error?

Having ridden a V7 and a V9, I have to say that I was impressed with both. IMHO, being impressed with the V9 would suggest the V85 is even better. I would think that a company noting improvements over previous designs would be worth touting. (We've made our car better than last years model, our most advanced design yet, etc.) All companies try to improve on previous models. Take the 142 position tailgate on GM pickups for example .  I see it as a good thing.  Just saying...

I got this too and in it it talked about "driving traffic".  Definite ad-speak there so I agree that it was probably meant for dealers and sent to the public by mistake.

I think that ad was meant for customers all along. Although it's reasonably grammatical, Guzzi's ad copy is always embarrassingly stilted. I'm pretty sure they translate it from Italian, but don't have a native English speaker edit it for nuance.
