Newbie needs maintenance help
« on: August 06, 2019, 04:08:50 PM »
About to hit 900 miles on my V9 Bobber. I have the service manual, yet I still have questions and I hope y'all can help.

1. For the gearbox oil replacement, the drain plug (24 mm) has a bit of interference from the crossover pipe from the exhaust. Do you loosen up the whole exhaust to get at this, or is there a specialty tool for it?

2. This is probably obvious, but the service manual says there are two oil engine drain plugs and I can only find one.

3. I'm not there yet, but the replacement of the final drive oil requires removal of the breather cap on top of it. Not certain how to get to that with a wrench or other tool because half the fitting is "hidden" in the final drive. Any advice there when the time comes?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Not owning a V9, but seeing it is sort of based on the smallblock, the second one if it has it should be on the front of the engine.

Can't help with the other two. The vent on the bevel for the Breva sits there like August in the undergrowth.  In the breva's case, I was able to revolve the cat-can crossover enough that I can get a spanner in there, and only just be able to get the bung out.

Assuming the V9 is similar or same to V7III the answers are:

* 24mm Wrench (drain), but a decent 15/16" worked well for me the first time.

* The smallblock HAD two engine oil drain plugs through the V7II, but only one on the III, and probably same for the V9.

* I don't bother with the vent, it's a small hole. Instead I fill with a funnel and tube through the level plug.

Kev, do you have to loosen the exhaust to get to it, or just slide it on from the back?

Can't say for sure on the V9, but on the III I can get to it from the side. The wrench just fits.

Milosh, there was a post on this not very long ago, with photos, circles & arrows, and where links were included for spanners that would fit - stamped from plate, rather than bar. Have a little look around - the right tool makes life easier.

Assuming the V9 is similar to a V7iii or Griso/CARC ...  as Kev mentioned, just skip the vent/breather cap.  It is kind of easy to mess it up.  Just loosen up the filler plug, then undo the drain plug ... no reason it needs more venting/air to empty out.

Here's a link to another First Service V7 not V9 but I'm sure most things are the same.
